I thought Object.freeze threw an exception on mutation. Digging a little more, it looks like we're both right. Per MDN, it throws if it is in "use strict" mode and silently ignores the mutation otherwise.

I once made a hacked version of javascript for work, starting with rhino. I adjusted it to make `.` and `[]` on null/undefined return undefined. Kind of like the `?.` in modern javascript, but it didn't exist back then. I was insp

You're in good company. The original C++ compiler translated to C. Haskell translates to C--. That sounds like a good approach, concentrate on the things you want to do/learn and let the C compiler pick up the rest. You can then

I bought one of those iBooks for Debian linux, but I found the resolution was a bit small for X. At the time, I had a thing for non-intel architectures. Prior to that, I had done a lot of work packaging up Debian for Sparc machines. I had a

Yeah, I used to use the app store version of Slack because it was sandboxed. (I later switched to having Safari run it as a web application.) Even if I trusted them, the sandbox would be a layer of protection against bugs. I'd love to

I meant that I have repositories checked out of github that contain pdf files. Most repositories that I check out of github are in ~/code, which I back up in case it disappears upstream. But it does look like a lot of those files actua

I haven't had it crash. Typically my documents are under a 300 pages (either academic books or papers), but occasionally I use the PDF reference, which is 1300 pages.

Yeah, I've been very happy with it over the years. But my one minor nit-pick is that it uses a _lot_ of memory. I presume it is pre-rendering stuff for speed. On iPhone and iPad I've been using Notability.

Yeah, these monitors were a bit heavier than most consumer 21" monitors at the time. We also got Viewsonic monitors for PCs, which were lighter. At the time, I had assumed the additional weight was from extra shielding, but I later rea

I remember the Sun monitors (21" I think) were about 80 lbs. I've read that part of that was a metal frame to hold all of the wires in front of the screen. They were fun monitors - we had a lab full of them, they would degauss on

Our app reports all of the runtime exceptions to the server. We had one years ago (maybe before 2008) that was caused by somebody's "toolbar" replacing a method like Element.appendChild with one that sometimes crashed. This i
