That distinction makes sense. I find Apple interesting in that even their "loss leaders" seem to be profitable, and more, that though they could throw tons of money into something like ebooks to try to hurt Amazon, they wouldn't. Though n

There's a precedent with "Wyngz" ( http://askfsis.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1450 ), which are chicken wing shaped but contain no actual wing. They just need a name catchier than "Pink Slime".

But what does "ekes out" mean for a company making as much money as Apple? They're probably impossible to separate, but it would be interesting to compare iTunes store profits to those of other retailers.

Is Apple getting dinged for Java installation being too easy? That seems pretty easy to fix. Having Java on by default in Safari was a bad choice (just like disk images and packages last year). I hope they'll do a scan and remove with So

Here in Tennessee, profs have to sign a form when they pick a textbook stating the cost. Unfortunately the deadline for picking books is about five months before the class, so some crappy, expensive books stick around because the time near

I really like "Concrete Mathematics". It has nice, interesting problems, a very readable style, and introduces all notation used. It also has well written solutions to all of the problems. That said, I read the book after I had a math deg

I'm sure we agree on the law and even on when and against whom it would be enforced. I'm not sure you would agree that there's value in pointing out to the companies advocating for a law which of their actions would technically fall outsid

Definitely, Apple would not go after NBC for this, nor should they. But I'm incredibly uncomfortable with laws that are this open to abuse, even with the assurance that those laws are absolutely necessary and will only be used against the

This is pretty nice. I wonder how hard it would be to import a minimal stats package. That and a table entry widget would make this a superb environment for a 1 semester probability and stats class.

If the same activists were advocating laws allowing them to go through other people's garbage looking for recyclables, with disproportionate fines or the suspension of all municipal services as the penalty for violation, then yes.

I can't find a reference for what firmware covers. Could it be as small as something like the BIOS on a PC that doesn't have to change between OS updates?

SE Xperia Pro, Slide, Captivate Glide, Desire Z? It seems like another problem with the diversity of hardware is coming up with names that don't sound like something you would buy from a vending machine in a truck stop restroom.

"TL is big because it includes everything possible" isn't the confusing part, what's confusing is why it has doubled in size every couple of years. Is that all from CTAN? The other why could be: why do they include everything when they ha

I think the string thing is inaccurate enough (try it!) that you might as well just eye-ball it. If accuracy mattered, I would make a paper circle of about the size of the pizza, divide into twelve (sixteen would work too) slices, remove o

I'm slightly surprised that VoiceServices API is still private on iOS. It must not be too far from the current state of the art, because automated appointment reminders now sound like the Mac TTS.

For a lot of things, a huge spatial visual index would be more useful than the text. Microsoft had some sort of project where you could have several thousand photos onscreen at a time. An analogous case from the physical world would be se

I'd love to see this tied to opening up the last-mile infrastructure to competition. It seems like variable pricing would require regulatory approval, so it might be a good time to renegotiate.
