A thumb drive is, or can be, a tiny computer that can lie about its contents depending on what's asking. I don't see a particular exploit in Schneier's case, but a thumb drive could be made that behaved differently depending

It seems like the Mac Mini was dismissed too quickly. It and the Air have i7s, but the one in the Mac Mini has four cores. The geekbench numbers look to be about 1000 units(?) under the hackintosh he built, so ~8% performance loss for con

I've tried to move all of my CDs to an mpd server, and even that has been only partially successful. It's just so much easier to browse in a physical space. It might help if tagging wasn't such a pain for non-pop music.

Experience with the public schools is what has made me consider homeschooling my daughter. Her first grade teacher had terrible communication skills, seemed constantly stressed, and there was a huge focus on standardized testing this year

This is different than Sedgewick's class but looks interesting. Locking the class isn't Coursera-wide. I actually took the Algs part II class, but can't access the videos anymore, while other classes that have been over for

I think chasing the discounts may be part of the excitement of shopping for some people. Someone was explaining how Kohl's does things, and it is completely insane, like there is an optimal one-hour window for buying certain things when th

Has someone actually paid $10+ for a Bud Light?? There appear to be some issues with the data. I can see $4 and maybe $6 at a bar or restaurant, but $10-12 will get you a whole pitcher of drinkable beer. How was the data collected?

I think physicists are way ahead of mathematics in many areas. The area I know a little about is SLE (Stochastic Loewner Evolution), which is a tool to prove results about a family of conformally invariant processes. Most of the results w

The publishers are already pushing bundled grading systems with their textbook. You get the textbook and also a login key so you can submit homework and quizzes online. I don't know how widespread it is yet, but I suspect many service cou

I think it's more like rsync + git. You have copies of previous versions, and just ask for their hash to figure out which previous version to diff against the current version, then send the diff.

Funny to find Knoxvillains here. I've looked once or twice for Coursera meet-ups and concluded that K-town was a bit of a tech desert. (Curiously, several pagan/witch meetups are available.)

The post didn't go into this, but the sum has a lovely closed form as well. The sum of the (phi^n-psi^n) terms is the difference of two geometric series, so you can apply sum(r^i, i=0..n)=(r^(n+1)-1)/(r-1) to get a formula that evaluates t

I'm curious why it matters that it's the current season. Several seasons worth of shows are available on Amazon as well as on Netflix. I would be much more interested in finding the first 20 or so seasons.
