Since precedent-wise, it only applies in the Second Circuit (CT, VT, and NY), I wonder if there are any similar cases (or if there's another entity that might try their luck against Google elsewhere, say in the 9th Cir.) that might res

Great info, thanks. That's a 4-6x size improvement from what I'm seeing now, so that'd be very helpful. Probably actually cheaper to buy this than just get a larger HDD. I'd looked at options that would auto-transcode

Any idea how many people that covers? Looks like just a couple square miles of coverage (roughly eyebyalled). Is that mostly business or residential areas?

Yeah, I'd like NAS support as well. I think their thinking is that the variability introduced by the network speed (especially since they advertise it with wifi), might cause unexpected failures that they won't see with a usb dri

Again, another not super cheap option is Tablo[0]. It's different than most since it doesn't actually have an HDMI plug, but rather it's basically just a back-end box than records off an antenna and then can play back on its

Interesting, I have a similar setup, but with the old standard PCI-based tuner that just pulls the data and dumps it. I hadn't seen a tuner option that would transcode it on the fly. Is there any noticeable lag when watching live? Do

That tool is handy, but I think the more standard one, especially if you're looking for antenna advice on somewhere like the CordCutter reddit, is actually under 'Check your address for free tv'. Same major data provided, but

With the exception of the low power stations, if you're within 10 miles of the tower and have a 'good' antenna (for some reasonable definition of good), you shouldn't have any trouble picking them up. I'm about 15

My experience was with NYSEG[0], which is a private company as I understand it. I've heard similar reports from others in other parts of the country but can't answer specifics about them. They did not provide customer information

Regarding the Feynmann quote, I suspect that behavior itself is intrinsic to humans. Few people want to be the guy coming up with a wildly different answer from a consensus/authoritative answer. We see the same thing in election poll

In some parts of the country, utility usage is effectively public knowledge (I'm guessing granularity varies a good bit though). Before we bought our first home, our agent advised us to call the local electric company to ask for past

So, I don't think people have 'drunk the DRM kool aid' so much as everyone has generally agreed for the last decade or so that GPLv2 doesn't prevent tivoization and GPLv3 does. That everyone includes RMS, by the way. He

I'm not sure how this is premature. The reason the practice is called tivoization is because we went through all this years ago when Tivo did it. The FSF acknowledges that releasing the source but locking you out from installing your
