Striking Similarity is the standard. While the standard there is not crystal clear, you expect to hear things like, 'hey, they have the same bug we do!' and 'is that one of our comments?!!'. Web folks these days have some strange ideas abo

It totally does. It means that you make an assertion you OWN something you didn't create. That makes you the worst kind of troll out there, a knowingly lying one.

Also, it says something when #3 on your big list of complaints about X is that switching graphics modes when starting X is a major problem that needs to be fixed.

I'd find that a compelling statement if they didn't update bin_steamdeps.py every time the application updated.

I'm actually really frustrated by Steam's linux port. If you're not running Ubuntu it's freakishly inconvenient to get running. Don't get me wrong - I'm not complaining that Steam doesn't have a gentoo package that is maintained by them.

In fact, that's almost certainly what it is. They see in 2003 they had a return that owed some money, and no return in 2004, so they assume that the same taxes are due from 2003. Then they do it again in 2005... This is what happens when y

I've seen this kind of thing out of MIT too often to 'trust process' or anything like that. See the Meal Plan debacle if you need to be corrected of that trust. I am not cynical about individual people, though. Hal Abelson seems like a goo

I actually know someone who works for DOJ and isn't insane. The problem with prosecutors is that they'd better know where that line between 'appropriate' and 'inappropriate' is, and if they're looking for magic words in poorly-worded statut

I believe the phrasing is different in the States, but it's the same general principle. But there are ways to get that kind of low standard in criminal trials, as well. What's REALLY fun is when a case gives prosecutors the ability to throw

It's funny how many people just LOVE Sinofsky, but this is exactly the kind of crap he championed. You can't create the future if you're afraid of it.

(edit: removed the happy birthday analogy, it doesn't really clarify anything) In John Coulton's case, I'm not sure what he was required to do in order to license the lyrics for his original cover; i.e. whether he paid the calculated rate o

You need to understand that these people are maximalists. They're never going to say 'we're asking for 7 years' in any context where that can be recorded, because it weakens their hand at the bargaining table. In fact, the shakier the cas

The only good that has come out of this horrible episode is that more people are finally starting to understand the problems of CFAA and with the unbalanced situation in federal cases.

I think the last time we played, one of my teammates came up with 'detractors'; i.e. 'stay away from here, it's bad news', once a bot was sure that a place was not good for pathing, they would drop one and it would make its way around to th

Hey Aaron. Communication via entity position is genius. Awesome! I wish my team had thought of that. I have to say that being a contestant in 6.370 (robocraft/battlecode/etc) was easily the most fun, and the best practical experience I had

Still a step closer. I'm not a genuine nuke geek, but hopefully there are a few around who can shed some light into what sort of impact the commercial use of thorium as a fuel is on the viability of the fuel in the long-run.

Mitnick actually got a Hollywood movie, if you recall :) Though I don't think they covered the 4.5 years he spent in there without trial (I don't know for sure, haven't seen the film).

I'm not sure this is practical, but I very much respect that people are devoting cycles to these issues, which do deserve attention. The UK law is problematic since it asks you to prove a negative, which is impossible. This tool doesn't rea
