Russ Cox, not Rob Pike, built that. It's not what's used in the App Engine SDK. I believe it was inspired by what we do in the App Engine SDK, though.

I guess you could call that "verbosity", but it's very different from what people normally think of when you refer to "Java" and "verbose".

Syntax is very important for a programming language. It's in your face all the time. A serious downside to many programming languages is their awful or inconsistent syntax, and that results in code that is hard to read and comprehend even b

This is the first time I've heard "Java-like verbosity" as a criticism of Go, and I'm baffled by it. Go is generally much more succinct than C++, Java and other similar statically typed languages. Can you expand on your comment?

This is nonsense. His key argument is that hard tasks are reducible to simple tasks, and therefore they are actually not all that hard. Ask anyone who's implemented, say, Paxos, and ask them whether because the individual steps were easy th

You said that sum types were omitted from Go because the designers were not aware of more recent developments. That's not true. They were omitted because they do not mesh well with the other features of the language, such as zero types, int

You're jumping to a false conclusion that Go's designers were not aware of those language features, and that that was the reason why they aren't in Go.

I've never heard of people having disdain for the particular knowledge or economic "science" (to use that term loosely) of MBAs. The problem people have with such folk is the way it is applied (too often blindly).

Whether to sign up to the TPP is NZ's decision, but agreeing to it cedes power beyond just copyright, so withdrawing from it later is harder. If NZ were to withdraw from the Berne Convention now, they would only suffer from the consequences

You'll notice that that was still New Zealand's decision.

There's lots of companies using Go for serious work these days. It's not just Google. Also, Go is an open source project. A company that cared could make their own internal folk and modify it as much as they want.

A one day deadline is a common pressure tactic to force a quick agreement from someone. There doesn't have to be any actual deadline.

iota is much more general than just enumerations. http://golang.org/ref/spec#Iota A neat example is using it to define constants for a bit field: const ( A = 1 << iota B C )

You wrote "200ms GC pauses are completely unacceptable for a web browser." That's a bald unqualified statement. 200ms GC pauses are possible in some situations, but you say it as if it's inevitable and unfixable. It's not. A garbage collect

ootachi does seem to like to pop into discussions about Go, throw around statements about Go's GC as if they were facts, despite never having used Go. A 200ms GC pause is entirely possible for a busy, unoptimised server. The question you sh

It's still around as "exp/ebnf" ( http://code.google.com/p/go/source/browse#hg%2Fsrc%2Fpkg%2Fe... ), but the exp/ tree is not considered part of the official Go 1 API, so it may change in backward-incompatible ways.

We don't bet, we experiment, measure and analyse. So far, I have found memory allocation in Go to be extremely predictable and controllable, and the GC behaviour likewise predictable. I don't know why you claim that "having all the data on

Have you found the GC to be an actual problem? Or are you assuming it is? It's a very different situation to other GC-based languages.
