What I find most astonishing is that people administer 'smart' drugs without having the slightest clue to their long-term side effects. You discount long-term risks in favor of short-term gains. We humans simply don't understand much of wha

It's just a movie, for us over here at HN. For most regular people, it's the first time they ever hear about Mark Zuckerberg, who apparently is the guy running the site they spend all day using and posting personal stuff to. And the guy who

As evidenced by Max Levchins recount of Paypal's problems in "Founders at Work", the massive problem with handling credit card payments is fraud, not coding or something similar. That's most probably the reason why so few firms tackle this

1- If you put any teenagers actions under a microscope, you will find regrettable and petty things. Just because Zuckerberg founded a huge company doesn't mean he necessarily had to be a wise adult at 19 (or whatever age he was). Cut the ma

That's very nice and how it should be. Still,if noone knows about your ideal workplace, you're still stuck trying to differentiate your firm from hundreds of others vying for attention with all the same marketing-speak.

For non-fiction: Remembering key concepts is a lot easier if you try to apply what you've learned to other articles, books or even the news you read. Try to actively remember what you recently read and how it fits with what you're reading n

Great insights, thanks! What I personally struggle with is learning all the necessary knowledge and lingo, coming from a different field - it's so much harder to even get to the point where you might come up with an investment idea of your

It's a mostly useless list. The main problems are just like with startups - finding the right people, getting your product right and fundraising. Amongst the questions not answered at all: - How do you find good co-founders if you're not am

In today's media environment you probably need a singular spokesperson as a front for interviews etc. You won't get the same amount of attention by just being an anonymous "hivemind". Also, it's very interesting how the media has turned on

See, that's exactly why mud-slinging is so successful. People have no clue if there was ever an iota of truth in the rape accusations, still Assange's image is now forever tainted by it. It's 'How to destroy your enemies 101'.

I think stating that your product "will ship no later than" when you know there are still some serious issues to be worked out is lying. Whether they actually know that they won't come in on schedule or just think it's overwhelmingly possib

This is from Wakemate's April 1st email: "The next batch of units will ship no later July 30th, 2010. Based on your pre-order date, you should expect your WakeMate no later than 07/30/2010, but probably significantly sooner." Wakemate has g

thanks, I knew about hushmail, but their usability and search function are not up to par. It's funny - I'd gladly pay for a technogically sophisticated alternative to gmail, just not to have all email data with google.

Guess my irony didn't show. Compared to the US and Asia and even EU-growth, Germany has not performed ahead of the pack at all, growth-wise. It has trailed behind US growth for years.

This "social" thing is similar to so many societal changes occuring over time. It's introduced, picked up, overdone, there is an anti-movement and over time, it finds its way into regular life in an amount and a way that fits with people's

Am I the only one to think this won't fly? People probably won't wait longer than a few seconds to see whom they're chatting with. The internet and chatroulette have made everyone pretty ADD about waiting.. Prepare for lot's of "Ciao's".

I think there is this huge gap between which startups are covered all the time in the tech-savy press and which ones actually (will) matter for most 'regular' people medium-to-long term. Being a 'media-darling' and getting lots of buzz IMHO
