It's my alarm clock that also happens to play podcasts and can browse and check email when needed. I guess it fits in a lot of niches.

0.5 would be good for anti-aliased drawing where you only get non-blurry lines at the 0.5's :)

I think what it does is mask/smear the fine detail - the texture of the sound - but in a way that we are used to, so still sounds natural.

it will depend on the implementation and processor if it's faster to calculate simultaneous sin and cos of a given angle, or sin(w) and sin(w+pi/2), but you are right you could do it all with sin or cos only. But there is already

the performance definitely varies doing this by hand - I guess the current optimizers don't rearrange the code as much as a human can while seeing that it's still equivalent. But sometimes (I'm using LLVM) just rearranging th

There are different aspects - I have good hearing (measured by quiet tones in an audiogram test) but a worse masking threshold than other people (so sounds are swamped by other, typically lower frequency sounds) but you are unlikely to find

You can drop a file on the OSX open-file dialog to navigate to that location and select the file. That helps a bit.

Hmm, it's not as if Pythagoras could measure exactly 27 Hz, or that we all hear down to exactly 27.00, or that it's easy to generate a pure tone that low without clearly audible harmonics. So I guess I'm not convinced.

Which makes me think - maybe algorithmic composition would work better the other way around - start with one or two short phrases and repeat them, adding more variation, and different types of variation over longer timescales.

Not a single measure, but this one must be at the limit of how repetitive music can be while still being interesting (at least for a few minutes, for me): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RY26KNRhbOA

Yes. I only use JUCE on OS X and Windows, but it's all statically linked and looks like it should be on other platforms. On windows you can change the linker settings from /MD to /MT so you aren't even depending on the M

Seems like Unicode is already full of all sorts of stuff that might only be useful to limited groups. Why not add some more - there's space! What would be bad would be adding things that have to be handled differently.

It could have been pink noise rather than white (an argument for using it here would be it has a more similar spectral content to music). Pink noise definitely compresses more though still maybe not that much.

I once carried a 2m length of 19" rack strip through town. Wow - instant respect from car drivers - and annoying that it made such a difference.

A big reason against FFT is latency - for good resolution at low frquencies you need a big FFT, so it takes longer to buffer that many samples before you can FFT them. Also a lot of the processes we want to apply to audio have much more eff

Yes, the difference signal is present in both the residue and the mp3, not lost just shifted in phase so it doesn't cancel exactly any more. In general the phase shifts are not audible but you can construct some signals (like two impul
