You should attend just to come see Adam Smith (Xobni) and Drew Houston (DropBox). It's going to be an instructive day (and my time is limited to 20 minutes, so I won't be able to do much harm).

You're right. That's not the sole reason. The primary reason is that originality is a relatively high bar -- particularly for the Internet. Just look at Twitter. So many tweets are retweets of what someone else said.

Sure, it's possible -- lots of things are possible. However, I'd argue that it's pretty improbable (at least in the early stages).

Interesting pricing model. No free option and a premium (per-server based) model for on premise. Very different from what you usually see for web-based services. I think it might work. Planning to try it out.

I have a biased opinion (I wrote the article), but I'm not sure that advice necessarily needs to be "fresh" in order to be useful/good. I learn "new" things all the time that it seems others have known for a long time.

The Founder's Institute is great. Heard Adeo speak at Startup Idol and he was fantastic. Insightful, practical advice. Really hope he brings this to Boston.

I was an investor in Lookery. Some interesting lessons from that story. I'm glad Scott decided to share some of the details. Too many startups simply fade away and don't pass any of their insights with other entrepreneurs. We need more s

I've got one, but instead of linking to it and self-promoting, will put in a vote for yours (because your topic is more important than mine for the YC audience). Cheers, and good luck.

Actually, SEO is about just one thing: 1. Creating exceptional content that is "rank worthy" and that people will link to. After you've created great content, if you've got time, then do the basics to make it easy for search engines to fin

I'll suggest The Pragmatic Programmer by Hunt and Thomas. Basic stuff, but lives up to the title of being "pragmatic". If you're going to write commercial software for a living, it's useful stuff to know (or be reminded of).

I like Portland a lot, but I'll assert that: [X] is a great place for startups. Where [X] = wherever you happen to be.

Yes, I think this is a viable model. Essentially, what folks like JBoss are doing is reducing the cost of acquisition by leveraging lighter-weight distribution techniques.

Thanks to who ever drudged this article up (it's 3+ years old!). I had just gotten rid of that nervous twitch induced by any mention of "enterprise sales". :) My best wishes to all of you that are dealing with these issues.

Congrats on the launch! Love the app, and like how you just "jump right in". However, you might want to have some minimal information about the company/team (even if it's just a link from the bottom right corner). That way, if some fancy V

Agreed that the Word formatting engine is horrendous. However, one thing you might want to do is just generate a "standard format" Word doc (without all the fancy layout/design/template). This way, those that really, really need a Word ver
