Assuming a modicum of technical sophistication on behalf of the legal people (which may be an invalid assumption), I think the fact that git/github is centered on the forking/sharing of code with an explicit graph to walk would just incur t

Either they do have a good set of advisors and they're just being thorough by asking HN (free advice from smart people, what's not to like?) or you have a new datapoint about the necessity of advisors.

Per http://help.github.com/dmca/ it is up to the user to make the counter claim. Fighting your legal battles is not a feature of Github. At least not of any of the advertised service levels.

It's too late after the DMCA request has arrived, you'll just get a 404. I imagine they have to lock / disable all forks beyond what the notice mentions as well, unless Sony, et al don't understand how git/github works.

Every emacs and vi user here just went down your checklist and said to themselves "I can do that" (okay, I'll cede the "initial theme" point) Seriously folks, just learn one of those two, there is nothing new under the sun when it comes to

Whether you place your trust in a multibillion dollar company, a one man shop, or just use an anonymizing proxy, the issues are the same. The billboard is just noise and you are technically sophisticated enough to know better.

But how is it spying if you use the service voluntarily, they tell you exactly that they collect and often (always?) let you opt out of the collection. That's a really diluted standard for "spying".

"spying on people" is a really unfair way to describe what happens when you voluntarily share your information with a third party who is in turn subpoenaed. You should be taking issue with the governments demanding the records rather than e
