climbing ropes are typically measured in meters and come in increments of 10(ie. 50, 60, 70, 80). that's likely the reason they used metric for the rope length... however I will agree with you that it's a weird choice given this i

I'm not an electrical engineer but it sounds implausible for power to be transferred that far without losing a bunch of it in the process, unless you have massive cables.

do they mean shingles? I am one of 3 people in their 30s that I know of to get shingles... all work in tech. seems like the disease meant for elderly people is becoming more common for young people... anecdotally at least

you should mention it. When I was a junior programmer I also wrote the nested ifs and I had a mentor show me how much cleaner the code could look which I really appreciated. I continue to use this style which is far superior than the one I

you're looking at this from a very narrow perspective in terms of use case... one of my favorite climbing areas near me(shelf road) became a reservation through rec.gov only campground. I used to show up on Saturday morning, pay $7 for

I don't solo regularly but I have soloed a few things(5.6 is the hardest I've soloed if you're familiar with climbing grades). my answer to this is basically once you've gotten to a certain level in climbing, some of the

you're like a bingo card rolled up into a single person. I recently used my circular saw, multi tool, and drill for my first real project(mounting a hangboard on my ceiling joists) and it was immensely satisfying... I see the allure bu

Everyone I've run into here(Colorado) with more than ~2 years of climbing experience uses the EDK for tying two ropes together for rappelling. Maybe it doesn't come up in conversation as commonly since we typically use single rope

correlation is not causation. were those times good because of what the Fed had done at the beginning of the decade? were they good because of the previous president's policy? were they good because of Reagan's policy?

I dont think this is right.... QE means the fed is buying up bonds like crazy which should push bond prices up. I'm not very knowledgeable here so please correct me if I'm wrong please.

Agreed. The one year I took off to travel changed my life for the better. I became more comfortable socially and made friends all over the world that I try to see whenever I travel again. I found my love of rock climbing on that trip which

In hindsight I would have done the "Silicon Valley University" thing and worked in SF for a year or two. Having big tech or growth startup on your resume appears to be quite important.

I love the area I live in and want to buy a house. I finally had saved up enough for a downpayment in 2020... obviously we all know what happened to the housing market around then. If I could have gotten that downpayment earlier I would hav

I don't think it's binary like that(I'm willing to be proven wrong). Vaccines are effective at preventing infection and particularly severe infections. Masks are only effective at preventing you spreading your own infection.

No idea what CA is doing with DST. As I mentioned in another comment, I misspoke. My issue was less about waking up to natural light and more about waking up in pitch black and using artificial light in place of natural light. In the winter

Agreed. However, if you're building something as massive as this you likely want to appeal to a broad market. I could be wrong but I suspect that most people would prefer having a window in their bedroom as opposed to not having one.

I agree with you that we can let people decide what trade offs they value; however, there is an issue where the university could find out that this is harmful to mental health or simply that students aren't willing to make this trade o

you're right. I think I should have clarified, waking up in a pitch black environment is the real issue, not necessarily the absence of natural light. I still think you want ambient light from outside as opposed to switching a lamp on

I'd challenge you to board up the windows in your room so that absolutely no light gets in. just do it for 5 days. you'll find waking up without natural light is an awful experience. I stayed in a room without a window for a week
