I have friends who love startups but would never start one. It's not for everyone.

Try https://github.com/jcrocholl/pep8 You could show the output of this to the submitter (somewhat bad -- barrier to submission) or flag them yourself so you can correct them occasionally. Examples: $ pep8 optparse.py optparse.py:69

Regardless of whether PageRank is "bad math" (the author being the arbiter of what's bad), it was never about being formally anal, it was about solving a problem -- making search much, much better than the then-competition. PageRank solves

I have found this to be very true. For one venture, I have a wiki (not unlike your spreadsheet) with everyone I've emailed and plan to email, with their data, position, when to email/call them next, their status, etc.

This made me consider the problem relying on shitstorms for feedback. The problem might be unrelated (for example, this might have been engineered in advance as a way of minimizing the negative reception of the decision). That is, in suffic

Try this: Follow HN ( http://archfinch.com/tag/hn ), block startups, ( http://archfinch.com/tag/startups ), windows8 ( http://archfinch.com/tag/windows8 ), then subscribe to your personal RSS feed. Perhaps I could make it into an extension.

You can also block the tag 'bitcoin' ( http://archfinch.com/tag/bitcoin ) and follow 'hn' ( http://archfinch.com/tag/hn ) on http://archfinch.com/ and subscribe to your personal RSS.

Thanks, fixed. Turns out memcached keys can't have spaces in them. At least using python-memcached: for char in key: if ord(char) < 33 or ord(char) == 127: raise Client.MemcachedKeyChara

No. From brief testing I found such automatic systems to be unreliable. However, perhaps I could add tagging suggestions based on content extraction / keywords.

For now just HN. Plus users sometimes submit links themselves. I plan to expand on that. Add other sources, perhaps add a way for people to add their own sources. RSS feeds filtered by topics would be cool.

I'm glad to see it's useful for someone. It's interesting how accurate the tags are and how much more information they give. I've been playing with them for a while and I can sit and browse for hours.

Ok, I think I've done the feeds. I need to test them for a while to see if they work as they are supposed to before adding them to the site, but you can start using them if you'd like: http://archfinch.com/rss/tags/programming/history/lisp

Regarding the original submission, yes, I got a ton of very useful feedback. The site differs greatly from what it was then (I wish I had comparison screenshots handy right now), I implemented some of the feedback. I did, however, ignore so

Right now you have to click 'discuss this' and in the sidebar, a link named 'via HN' pops up. This needs some improvement, but I can't put too much information in the link boxes, so it's a tough one.
