Speed is not the only advantage of using Rust on the backend.

I'm hearing this so often that I think I have to write a blog post some day. I think both Zig and Rust can be an alternative to Go. Zig is still young, so it probably lacks tools for many domains, but if it grows I expect it to get m

Most of the posts mentioning Rust not being the best choicce for a startup talk about iteration speed and prototyping. In that light I don't think this is the best heuristic. If you need to prototype quickly and search for a market fit

> Go being “verbose”? Or “fragile”? I doubt we’re talking about the same Go. Maybe compared to C, Go is quite concise, but Go is nowhere near Rust's level of expressiveness, especially with poor generics support, much more verbose e

I’d be interested in it as well. I imagine the author talks about Rust being hard, cause extending Ruby with Rust doesn’t seem problematic. Here is an example of simd json extension written in Rust using Rutie: https://github.com

I've written web backends in Rust and it's fine for backend apps, especially APIs. For HTML rendering it's a bit lacking at the moment as it doesn't have the whole ecosystem that Rails for example has, but for APIs I hav

I've written a few APIs in Rust and I'm kinda baffled on what the author is trying to convey. On the one hand he mentions that it's a simple CRUD application, on the other hand he mentions complexity that arose from using Rus

Being able to understand the syntax and by implication being able to understand a single piece of code in front of your eyes doesn't mean you will understand what it actually does. If you're talking about a small piece of code mai

I have a very limited experience with Python (3 months of production experience), but vast Ruby experience and I think a lot of the things apply to both. For me these are reasons why I would choose Rust over Python or Ruby in most cases: *

I'm curious, are there any specific parts of the stack that make backend dev harder for you? My experience with async Rust on the backend is that it doesn't really slow me down too much, cause most of the problems are not really r

I started working with Ruby almost two decades ago and I can confirm that, in fact, Ruby is slow. It might be fast enough to make it viable for most web apps, but compared to Go or Rust it will be much harder to write a fast app in Ruby. I&

Good point about out of bounds read! Totally correct, what I meant is that you can panic when reading outside of array range, but my non-systems programming language background shows here :)

by drogus 4y ago
I agree with some of the points, but some of them are a bit weird. Like: creating a section called "Rust is unpredictable", because one library panicked? Another thing is with the out of bound reads. Sure, you can make an out of

Usually you can still find jobs easily. Most of these laws also bar companies from defining it very broadly, so I don't think they could make a non-compete like "any programming job"

Sounds good to me!

by drogus 4y ago
Yeah, I absolutely couldn't survive on 50% of my current salary, but as far as I know non-compete can't also be "any programming job". So given I sign a non-compete with, for example, a fintech company, it would be total

This is how it works in Germany and in some other EU countries. Companies need to pay 50% of an average of 3 last months salary in order to enforce a non-compete clause.

by drogus 4y ago
In Germany in order for a non-compete agreement to be valid a company has to pay an employee money for the non-compete period. 50% of an average of last 3 months of employment. With this law I would be actually quite happy for a company to

What exactly has Rust added in recent months or even years? The way I see it most changes in the language are making existing features work more consistently.

I’m genuinly curious - how did you „solve” memory safety issues in C/C++?
88.
by drogus 4y ago
No, assembly most of the time won’t be more efficient than langs like Go or Rust simply because people won’t be able to write efficient optimized code on pair with what modern languages can achieve and then it would be harder to actually ar
