Why was this posted to HN? There is nothing new or original in the setup presented. People have been self-hosting all kinds of things on commodity hardware for decades, even things said to be "impossible" to self-host like email.

The "consumer protections" of the EU basically amount to communism (i.e., state interference in private matters). So no, that's not a thing the U.K. should emulate.

Absolutely, and this is why one of the only viable options for truly private communication is Signal on a degoogled ROM like Graphene. Matrix also works, but you need your server.

Yes, locked bootloaders secure the profits of the manufacturers who want to run crapware on your device for their benefit. The hardware is theoretically yours but they won't allow you to use it in the way you want, it's shocking

Literally thousands of games have been written in C, and all graphics APIs (OpenGL, Vulkan, DX) are C APIs, so it isn't weird at all. All major game engines are also written in C/C++.

I think it just means "once powerful and important, but now practically irrelevant." England is a better example though.

> True as it may be that they are slow, I doubt it's caused by the use of dynamic programming languages. Yes it is. It's the same reason desktop GUI apps are now slower than Windows 95-era apps that were written in C.

Microsoft should just open source Windows at this point.

Yes, because C is, by virtue of its history and central role in the development of all mainstream operating systems, the lowest common denominator. Also, if I remember correctly, the first Rust and Go compilers were written in C.

Yes and no. Clearly what you said is true, but the more profound reason is that C just minimally reflects how computers work. The rest is just convention.

I don't see that as a problem. C has been the bedrock of computing since the 1970s because it is the most minimal way of speaking to the hardware in a mostly portable way. Anything can be done in C, from writing hardware drivers, to GU

Absolutely. I don't have a blog but run my own email, several game servers, Matrix instance, Nextcloud and other internal services on a retired gaming PC. The total cost of my cloud subscriptions is $0, and no one is snooping on me. It

The settings used by Arkenfox broadly mirror that of the Tor browser. If you find Tor usable, then Firefox with this config should be fine.

This. Since Firefox claims to be a privacy-first browser, it should, by default, use the Arkenfox settings (report spoofed values for language, screen size, fonts, and many other attributes that aid fingerprinting), and include uBlock Origi

It's all bug fixes it seems. What is surprising is that so many bugs remain even after all this time and effort. And no, for the most part these are not the kinds of bugs that are squashed by a rewrite in Rust.

I haven't tested this particular Thunderbolt SFP adapter, but my experience with a TP-Link 1Gbps USB adapter is that it adds about 4ms of latency. Far from being unusable and similar to WiFi perhaps, but worse than PCIe cards that shou

I used to have an SFP28 Mellanox card in my home server, but went back to a simple 2.5G Ethernet port for the LAN side. The Mellanox card ran hot and needed an extra fan near it to dissipate the heat. It was cool but there was no real benef
