I don't think the knowledge is gone, we could make that or maybe even better. The point is nobody wants it, most things we build need to be torn down after at most a few decades anyway.

I read this as an extended life metaphor, the first reports seemed to describe a maternity ward, then a school etc. They get progressively more confused, ending with a grown up realisation that every moment matters. Didnt see much horror or

Very true, but HN has a hard limit on how much time I will spend here. A few stories on the main page plus sometimes comments, and that's it for the day. Social media is designed to eliminate that limit, I used to be able to spend an e

Quit Twitter about 6 years ago because of related issues. Checked out Mastodon, but apart from the distributed aspect it just seems like more of the same, as in an evolution upon the experience of watching TV, in the internet era. I've

No, it does. I'm saying asking someone where they're from yeilds no facts about that person if all you get back is a name of the country. It doesn't mean they definitely grew up there, or that they hold citizenship. But it&#x

People ask each other where they're from, even though it gives you precisely zero amount of concrete information about a person, and then proceed to paint a picture going forward of that person based on assumptions about other people f

The speed of this situation unfolding makes me wonder if it was known for a while and arrests were timed for the world cup for maximum damage.

Do be careful around beavers though. Their teeth are REALLY strong, I know at least one example personally of a human killed by a beaver, it bit through a critical vein in his leg and the guy bled to death. To be fair the guy was a hunter s

Hopefully Minecraft has a mod to let you fly around in a helicopter and pick people up from the ground only to drop them confused on top of a skyscraper.

I spent the last 15 years in London and I strongly disagree. Not only are foreigners judged (perhaps subconsciously) on how British they can be, where you came from initially matters a great deal as well, which is why I worked on loosing my

I quit Twitter years ago not due to any of these problems (they are endemic to the whole of internet), but because I was addicted to the scrolling. It was a lot easier than I thought to quit and I can't even imagine anymore what I thou

That's what I've been thinking about for a while as well. Why live down the gravity well if you don't have to? Some might still choose it, much like some modern people choose to live in the forest. And in space, there is plen

The policy doesn't make sense. Farming benefits massively from economies of scale, and farmland in most of Eastern Europe is already very fragmented due to "agricultural reforms" in 45. If you're not familiar with that s

In Poland atm you can't even buy farmland unless you are a registered farmer in the local county already. Its a new rule and hopefully they remove it cause its insane. And then of course you can't just build on it. You may attempt
