That's my point, you can't establish trust by checking everything yourself. So you delegate to other things as an approximation. In this case, Signal seems to be reputable, have competent developers and afaik no history of leaks o

See my other comment about determinism: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23424925 Trying to get a bit-to-bit equivalent of a binary lifted from the app store sounds challenging to say the least.

This is actually more involved than it sounds. It is pretty easy for the compiler to introduce nondeterminism and result in slightly different binaries. I know this for a fact because I fixed a couple bugs like this in LLVM. For the curious

How do you know that the binary you run actually corresponds to the source code you read? EDIT: and would you then also review every commit to make sure nothing bad gets introduced? No, at some point you have to place trust in the vendor, t

How does the Facebook SDK in a 3rd party app correlate that you're the same user if you don't log into the app with FB? Is there some universal device identifier all your apps have access to?

Imagine the following scenario, you have encountered an actual bug in concurrent code, and you think it would be great to work on a model and invariants that lets TLA+ find the bug (as an exercise). So you start writing a model, and a set o

TLA+ doesn't prove anything to be "correct" or "flawless", I find it extremely worrisome that you claim as much. It failed to exhibit traces that violated your invariants, which says something completely different.

TLA+ is really good at finding problematic traces involving concurrent agents, so it naturally shines in distributed systems. For something that relies on finding problematic inputs (like for compilers), SMT solvers like Z3 are a more natur
