Yea I wish we could keep the browser in document mode and switch to app mode if someone is an asshole enough to embed an article in a single page app that loads the content asynchronously.

> The Host City Contract, as written by the IOC, stipulates where any profits would go. 20% goes to Olympic organizing bodies and the part that LA gets to keep can ONLY be used for youth sports initiatives—not affordable housing, homeles

Haven’t you ever seen Cool Runnings? Bobsled is the ONLY sport I’ll watch.

Of course, they won’t build housing, schools, libraries, services, or hospitals, so it’s hard to see how this will benefit the people of LA at all.

I believe I covered that—authors who don’t contribute. Also, I know too many angry grad students to believe that contributors always get credit.

Terms of service should not imply consent to a transaction: that is inherently a dishonest and exploitative method of running a business. Also, the idea of paying to use a free service is an oxymoron. Google is not and has never been free,

My understanding is that academic authorship credit is political: authors don’t always contribute, and contributors don’t always get credit. Is this not the case?

I believe you can disable incoming calls at the telecom level. Not sure who offers this but I do some phone banking and run into this about 1/100 calls. Apple really needs a way to enable permanent do not disturb for just phone calls,

Honestly they could start by building voice controls that people want to use rather than the voice assistant bullshit. Idk what the google one is like, but siri is a toy.

Latency is also much less important with highly cacheable content. At least, I can’t really think of examples to the contrary. My patience for loading pages browsing is many orders of magnitude higher than realtime uses. Bandwidth seems to

Not everyone has realtime needs. If you're not voice chatting or playing realtime games it's not that bad.

The love you have for a lover is exactly equal to the love you have for jewelry? I would hope these refer to entirely different concepts.

Sometimes love is less in the outward expression and more in the intent and shared understanding of the world. There is no companionship with a robot—at least, not without AGI.

AI is “do you wish you had a slave”. I can’t think of any other definition that fits all the use cases. It’s also more obvious why it’s a snake oil term: slaves are people you can communicate meaningfully with in both directions.

You can always log to stderr with a stack trace and exit with a non zero static code. I’m guessing they’re referring to the fact that the built in panic keyword can be “caught” further up the stack a la an exception.
