I honestly don't understand that, as well. I am a real engineer on paper and now do full-time software development. The funny thing is, "real" engineers mostly think that programming computers is like doing magic. Meanwhile,

That is largely due to a difference in complexity.I would say that the level of complexity of a blueprint of a house is on par with a 20-30 line python solution of a leet code easy excercise to a programmer. If the one reading the blue prin

I have read "Mastering the Market Cycle" by Howard Marks, once, and liked it in general. The topic is the market cycle itself with focus on investing. It is not about specific companies or technologies, though.

I have lived in a foreign country for about 3 years. My wife is from there and I speak with her in that language every day. I also took courses until the B2 level. My communication in that language amounts to easily more than 5000hrs. I am

I have a similar experience. I got a prescription for adderall type medicine when I was around 18 years old. I think my ADHD is not a very severe one. Taking the medication was not worth it for me. I could focus better after taking the pill

You could try out Rider on linux. I use it since a few months (on Windows though) and it is pretty great. I used Visual Studio before and Rider is definitely competitive.

I got tinnitus during a particularly stressful (job related) situation in my life. It stayed for about a year or two. Now it is completely gone. I did not do any therapy. It seems what helped for me was "just" to get rid of the st

We had this oftentimes when I was young. You would have them e.g. on your grandma's birthday or other special occasions. I think it was more an old people's thing, but they still sell them in bakeries. This is in the west of the c

I, too, was a "real" engineer before transitioning into software. I think you are right with your analysis. "Real" engineering, as practised by people in the industry, is neither harder nor more rigorous than real world

I had a job interview with an American (NASDAQ) company, for their swiss office, recently. They offered around 100k CHF for a 42h/week contract with 5 weeks of vacation. It is indeed surprisingly low, compared to the high cost of livi

Actually the pay is based on the required qualification for this job. Oftentines, for software developers, they just require a bachelor's degree and will pay E11. If you apply with a higher degree, you will not be paid more..

The difference is practice. After driving for some years you get good at it and need much less effort. Then it becomes more enjoyable.

"Finite Elements Using Maple", "The finite element method displayed" - I am a mechanical engineer by education. These are two of the first books that made me understand finite element simulations, more than a decade ago

I have also bought a dehumidifier fo this purpose, this year. It works great. It uses less energy than I would need to keep the room dry by heating. For insulation I use thermal clothes and thus can significantly lower the room temperature

This. You can more or less get any kind of stiffness, with any material by changing the geometry. I guess the different feel that people have when using frames of various materials is more due to geometric constraints of the frame. A frame
