Is Zig gaining traction? It almost seems like the project has gone radio silent in the past year. It's hard for a language to get traction when it's not even 1.0 and there's not much of a roadmap on how and when they'l

That is not a problem. Christoph does not have the right to gatekeep who can use DMA. If he tried to veto an Nvidia graphics driver from using DMA using the excuse that "it might create more work for me", everyone would rightful

You can't just endlessly dump more busywork on Rust developers (including genuinely bad code practices) and expect them to deal with it. There is zero good reason to duplicate that code and refactor it later.

I'm sorry, but no. Christoph clearly didn't even spend 5 seconds looking at the patches before rejecting them. His first objection was obviously false, and when this was pointed out he fell back on blanket objection to rust with

> Why would he do that? He has no control over an independent library outside of C DMA? That is the crux of the entire drama and why R4L developers got upset at Christoph in the first place, and asked Linus to intervene.

This is profoundly silly. First of all because we're talking about the kernel community here, which was incredibly toxic and dramatic long before Rust even existed. Linus has chilled out in the past few years but that legacy isn't

It's a problem that can be easily fixed with tooling that's smart enough to just look inside the file. Detached signatures aren't necessarily better, just different.

The kernel is extremely complex. He very likely still needs to work with other maintainers if his code breaks their code. In this case he has LESS work to do, because the R4L developers own all fixes to Rust code, and he is free to break

No, the point is nonsense. Rust is a consumer of the APIs just like every other driver / subsystem is. Any change to the C APIs would likely require collaboration with those other maintainers no different than Rust. And CH would be i

This is a touch dramatic. The hash of the payload and the hash of the RPM header are still reproducible and can be verified. It's just that the existence of internal signatures makes it impossible to do a simple checksum of the file.
