In addition to the medical usecases listed in the other comments, it's also just pretty cool.

At most a little over one year ago, I installed Signal Desktop to open a link in a message I had received on my desktop. This is, apparently, deliberately unsupported, since the app claims that "[f]or your security, chat history isn&#x

That's not portable, though. OpenBSD, for example, doesn't have /proc.

Plenty of folk won't want adult content to show up in their search results. I'd wager that those that do are capable enough to check their settings, given that they should know concepts like safe search from google.

At least on old.reddit.com, underneath the searchbar is an expandable help section that, among others, explains the nsfw: search parameter. I'd hardly call that hidden.

You need to toggle the sun switch top right to moon, if you mean the "dark mode" effect.

Sure, that makes sense. Out of curiosity, do you know of any way to design a syscall ABI that's not C-like that was either used in the past or would have some advantages if a new OS adopted it? I imagine that lisp machines did things d

I'd argue that it follows the CPU's native integer representation, which C also does. Yes, if your language uses tagged integers or something, you'll have to marshal the syscall arguments/results from/to your own re

That is not true on Linux, where you can just make syscalls yourself. They don't even use the C ABI, even if it's pretty similar (For syscalls, the fourth argument is passed in R10 instead of RCX, since that holds the return addre

But the return value guarantee is, as far as I can see, a C++11 change, so you can't ignore those. And as of C++11, c_str is noexcept, so it cannot allocate anything.

I don't really know how to point this out without sounding rude and obnoxious, which is not my intention, but it's "per se" (Latin for by itself), not "per say".

One is that the variable is called openFile and not f. I don't know enough python to see something else wrong with that but would love to know too, since I've written such a line just last week.

It's not a good thing. Desktop apps that don't adhere to the UI/UX conventions of the platform they run on almost universally suck.

I have had this problem several times on Linux, with different monitors, so it seems that it can actually happen on every OS.

Because unlike rooms and doors, you can switch what port a monitor is connected to.

The entire point of POSIX is that, if you only use what it defines, your program automatically becomes cross-platform, because it will run on several Unices, as well as other systems (like Haiku).

To me, it seems like the people thinking inside the box are those that claim that cross-platform necessarily implies it runs on Windows.
