Most well-written functional programs I've seen actually look like your examples--or rather, the very top-level does. The rest of the code is devoted to telling the language enough about your domain that it's possible to express your goals.

There seems to be a really heavy bias towards relatively new SF; is this because there are more awards now than there used to be, or because you only have data going so far back?

Yeah I came here to point this out. I'd understand if pip weren't mentioned, but easy_install has been the standard for many years.

I'm amazed that an XKCD comic has inspired at least 3 front-page articles on HN. I think passwords are one of those things that, even in the tech world, people know that they should do better at but just haven't gotten around to it yet. Tha

There seems to be a really widespread EC2 outage. My company's site is down and we're in multiple availability zones. Foursquare is down as well.

The whole point of cross-platform tools is that they run on multiple platforms. One of the platforms they likely run on is the Mac.

I'm not sure that this effectively replaces any part of the traditional process (resume--phone interview(s)--onsite interview(s)). I guess it comes closest to replacing the phone screen, but my understanding is that the goal of the phone sc

That was my first thought as well. Apparently anything involving server-side code is now Heroku.

Not necessarily. A lot of apps (document-based apps, for example) really just need a basic online data store and simple authentication.

At my school our intro class was in Python, but an SICP class was required for majors. I think this was a pretty decent compromise, especially since many prospective majors placed out of the intro class anyway. I agree that SICP (really FP

I'm about to start work at a New Yrk startup, and I have had no trouble finding a place to live on my probably average salary. Granted, I am single and don't have children, but I imagine that's not uncommon for startup employees.

I'm pretty sure my recent comments have been very grumpy. I wish I could get confirmation of this, but the service seems to be down.

I spend some of my free time customizing my environment, which for me means basically zsh and emacs. I find this process somewhat enjoyable, and I find that using said environment to get actual work done makes the work much more enjoyable.

There is a meaningful distinction to be made between passion about programming and passion about your product. The former is probably a necessity for good programmers, while the latter might not be necessary and might be hard to maintain wi

I haven't been in the industry that long, but I've encountered a few "security professionals"--auditors, penetration testers, etc. All of them have been totally incompetent; they could tell you the definition of, say, a SQL injection attack

I really don't understand the point of this article. The author seems to be honestly interested in exploring GPU computation, and is clearly reasonably well-read in the field. The sarcasm is just really off-putting, though, and the article

Hermes is also the name of a Greek messenger god so potential users of both products (the Mount Olympus IT department, for instance) are likely to be confused. Seriously, though, it's a really obvious name for a messaging-related project an
