Exactly this. But I disagree that settled is natural. Humans evolved in nomadic tribes that followed the herds. Stability is a social technology that was developed alongside agriculture. Stability feels unnatural to me and I get the itch af

Certainly many people on this website could if it were their priority. Some money is required, but not very much. I’m sure I make less money than many here because I take jobs that prioritize remote work and flexibility. So what’s really th

I’ve learned that the passage of time is extremely relative. My college years were extremely full of new experiences and they feel like ages. Once I started working, my life was very rote and consisted mainly of driving from home to work an

I feel like the last 10 years have been a maturing phase. There weren’t a lot of opportunities for young upstarts without funding. It seemed like it was the era of big money innovation, burning mountains of cash trying to stake the last few

I worked in climate policy for awhile. I got out of it because I lost hope. I believe our governments have lost hope also. Covid taught us that if they inflict the necessary pain to control carbon, our governments will be consumed by populi

You can stop expecting that you will ever have these good feelings and learn to get them from somthing other than work.

This does not sound very radical at all. Software engineering will no doubt be transformed within 10 years and there’s plenty of uncertainty around what our future employment needs will be for people who primarily code. I feel vary similar

And apparently 3D renders can be inferred from only 2d images like in these image gen models, so even without video or parallax, brains could probably model the world in 3D.

Yes, there’s rudimentary evidence that there’s essentially a 3D engine within the model that participates in generating the image. If we could inspect and interpret the whole process it would likely be bizarre and byzantine, like a sort of

You would need to train on pairings of normal map images to source images. To my knowledge, that’s not a common training technique and this ability seems to bridge across several open models.

This is awesome! So one of the big reasons there was hype about Sora is that it felt very likely from watching a few videos that there was an internal physical simulation of the world happening and the video was more like a camera recording

That’s just the thing, it literally changes your prompt instructions to randomize gender and ethnicity even when you specify. If you do specify, it might flag you as being inappropriate and give a refusal. This has been a common strategy fo

I feel like the answer is pretty clear. Each country will need to develop models that conform to their own national identity and politics. Things are biased only in context, not universally. An American model would appear biased in Brazil.

At this point, the next thing that will blow me away is AGI at human expert level or a Gaussian Splat diffusion model that can build any arbitrary 3D scene from text or a single image. High bar, but the technology world is already full of d

These are downloadable open models that can be fined tuned. They are the opposite of censored. If you have the motivation, you can bias them however you please.

This doesn’t seem to be a very meaningful theory to draw conclusions about life. We have no idea how much carbon is already present in Titan’s ocean and if there’s need for a water cycle that connects to the surface. Also this study only co

My grandmother was a nurse and wore her watch on her inner wrist. I think it was common and protected it from getting snagged during her rounds. Now I don’t think nurses are usually allowed to wear watches in most hospitals.

He will be in the same boat as the rest of us. In 12 years I expect the current crop of AI capabilities will have hit maturity. We will all collectively have to figure out how life+AI looks like, just as we have done with life+iPhones.

It produces basically random translations. This is covered in the 0-shot case where no translation manual was included in the context. Due to how rare this language is, it’s essentially untranslated in the training corpus.
