Even if there are people like yourself who actually want to work 17 hour days for 7 days in a row (!), shouldn't we as patients be able to have doctors who are not allowed to do that insanity? Medical error is the #3 cause of death in

This rings incredibly true for me. I'm certainly the type of parent that lets my kids wander farther than normal (by today's ridiculous standard of normal anyway, which means within 5 feet) and I see constant looks of concern from

As a lover of maps I also instinctively thought of USA Today. I can't locate a source right now, but I remember reading that USA Today's multi-color, full page weather map on the back was way ahead of its time, before any other pu

Really cool to hear about the OER adoption, I'd love to hear more about the decision process. From another comment in this thread it sounds like people in your dept actually wrote/revised significant content of the text. That'

And also it sounds like you have worked with good professors who actually care about teaching, which is always really good to hear. Sometimes hearing about the more cynical side of how higher ed is delivered gets depressing. So keep doing w

I honestly hope you're right. And if so things like OpenStax might really work in higher ed. We'll definitely respond accordingly if the market tells us they want a cheaper simpler textbook.

The professors still choose the textbook. They dictate what the student needs to buy (or rent or acquire through other means). That part of the equation hasn't changed in decades, as far as I am aware. But they're entirely disconn

I have a number of psychologist FB friends and every one that I know of has changed their name on FB to make it harder for patients to find them. Many go with FirstName MiddleName, some make up a last name, etc. That's not to say that

One point that is often undiscussed: what defines a textbook has expanded greatly. It used to be that a textbook was just a book. But now a textbook is the book plus a huge collection of other resources, most of which the student never sees

I sort of wondered about that thinking maybe there's only one logical way to design a git GUI on osx, but then even within this thread people brought up a few other examples that look totally different: http://gitup.co/

Another thing you'll notice in that image is that sex offenses get treated differently than other crimes. My understanding is that in an effort to protect the privacy of the victims, those crimes never have accurate geolocations, and i

The major clusters in the TL and Mission are real, for sure. But as one example, the Hall of Justice at 850 Bryant still sticks out in a lot of these. You can see it in the version by crime type where plotting the points. It's the spot

Almost all the weird spikes in the SF crime data are data issues, not real crime trends. If you're naive about it you'll get to the conclusion that one spot in SOMA along Bryant is the crime capital of SF, except that's just

It's worth noting the study was specifically about CBT for depression, which may not indicate similar effects for CBT for other disorders. As always it's worth reading the actual study and not just the headlines. From the study: &
