I'm almost 30 and I haven't run into a "survival situation" where I needed cursive. I would hazard a guess it falls below knowing Spanish but above folding origami cranes.

Weird I scrolled this far for “friends”. That’s the killer feature. I haven’t met a person who couldn’t use PLEX.

I’m a heavy Tailscale user, so I do trust them quite a bit, but I never used the Tailscale SSH feature. I feel like OpenSSH’s security record is pretty unbeatable, not sure why I’d swap over for such a security-sensitive tool.

Perhaps “Jobs for new families” would be better phrasing? This isn’t a hypothetical scenario though - the lack of economic opportunity across the border is a key reason of why I’m married.

I think you’re tilting at windmills here. The industries sustaining the city are healthcare, finance and higher edu. There’s no invasion of m fedora-toting tech bros building B2B SaaS AI Agents. This is a group of current inhabitants who

Is this not the Rust-Belt writ large? De-industrialization for decades on decades - of which Pittsburgh did an okay job of pivoting (many many other towns nearby faired far far worse) - pile on brain drain to the Coasts and a opioid epide

Jobs and new families? I’ve become intimately familiar with Youngstown, OH - about 70 miles away from the Pittsburgh - and it’s a great case study of how far a once-powerhouse city can fall if it doesn’t a actively reinvent itself.

Unexpected to see this talked about on HN. I actually went through the Allegheny county “newcomer tax” just some months ago. It was a bit of a strange process to appeal (I lost; my house is very weird for the area). While I do see the benef

Have people (smarter than me) come up with a good equation - or at least heuristic - to determine what inventions are morally good? I suppose it'd be from a utilitarian perspective? Ex: My gut feeling is nitrogen fixing would rank &quo

My hobby horse is the lack of a “modern” filesystem on obsd. Without journaling I really don’t agree with the oft repeated claims it makes a good “router”. Any networking gear I’ve used is treated as an appliance and I don’t want an unfortu

If I recall correctly, I was obsessed with the PBS show "Cyberchase" and had Googled the main antagonists name "Hacker" which lead to me HackForums. It ended up being a very significant influence on my computing career!

Nostr is basically this. It's a cool idea , in practice it kind of sucks as an experience. It's been developed adjacent to the Bitcoin community and I can't say there's much going on besides spam.

Perhaps ATProto vs. ActivityPub will been seen as the Fediverse's East-West Schism. Instead of decrees over the "filioque" we get blog posts about the definition of "federation" where both parties talk past each oth
