If you're looking for something like this with vim bindings and functionality, I really like VimR https://github.com/qvacua/vimr

Nice! I like the idea of using existing protocols to build something more usable for large groups. How does this compare to TopicBox? https://www.topicbox.com/

The theoretical site described in the article requires that every account be tied to a real person (e.g. by driver's license or library card). I think having something like this would produce a climate very different from those on the

Yup, everyone has everyone else's sender key. This is more or less equivalent to having a single shared group key, but there are some practical reasons why it's split out. I think one of them is that it makes symmetric key ratchet

I don't know exactly why this isn't done. Someone else mentioned this, this was my response https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20645457 I don't think anyone has to update their keypairs if they get promoted

Even better, why not have a single symmetric group key that everyone uses to communicate? Assume the delivery service is perfect, so you never get dropped messages, and everyone ratchets the group key forward, thus providing perfect forward

If you don't need PFS you could probably modify MLS to be a bit simpler. Firstly, no need for sender keys. A single group key will do. When you remove someone from the group, you still do the group update and derive a new group key (un

Good point. I don't think it'd be unreasonable to promote everyone to their parent in this example. One thing that I left out of the post is that the MLS ratchet tree has something called a "tree hash". Every node carrie

I don't think ECIES uses any PKI. The setup is: given a DH pubkey P, generate a DH ephemeral key Q, do the DHKE to derive k, encrypt your message m, then send (Q, E_k(m)).

This was a really neat exposition! I have a few questions: 1. Is D a binary random variable? If so, what exactly does it mean to say beta*D + beta_0 is an approximation for log odds? Doesn't this formula only take on 2 possible values?

If stories like this interest you, I highly recommend Nat Geo's Valley of the Boom. I don't even like "history shows" but it's a funny and self-aware take on SV in the 90s with solid acting and a pretty low budget.

Slightly OT, but I didn't see an important question being asked: What is the motivating threat model of ProtonMail? If I just want to access my email securely, that's done by HTTPS. If I want an end-to-end encrypted solution, Prot
