I've edited/clarified the claim above. Parent did say "without you having a bug" and entering an UNPREDICTABLE state would be buggy code. Also, "maybe puts garbage data in a register" is not UB, it's a muc

I've edited my claim to be a bit more clear, however in the context of parent's claim we are talking about bug-free code on an non-buggy physical processor, and I think implicitly we are talking about user-mode code where one does

There is no UB in hardware registers or physical DRAM, I don't think you actually have familiarity with how the hardware works if you make this claim. (Or perhaps you aren't familiar with how crazy "UB" in the sense of t

I don't think it was ever a social taboo. PSAs and the morals in children's stories are intended aspirationally to change social norms rather than reinforce existing ones; you don't see PSAs about how you should wear clothes

It's not a silly piece of trivia, it's a completely different thing than what people think of as the "Nobel Prize", which is the set of prizes established by Nobel's will, not an unrelated prize named after him to l

I think we are in agreement? Odin works the way you describe, and GP in response expressed a preference that the compiler instead fail at compile time if it detected that memory had not been explicitly initialized; my response was to explai

No, tmux uses unix domain sockets. I have no idea why screen chose to take the setuid approach instead here; it seems totally unnecessary to have root privileges. EDIT: Further down, TFA gives a plausible explanation: the current screen dev

I am not a lawyer, but I'm assuming that if someone stockpiles for reading later (parent's scenario), without making the copies available to others at all, then that would be covered by the ruling since it's a subset of what

"call out" as a metaphor doesn't apply to the discussing of a online newsletter on a separate site; neither the author nor other readers are likely to be aware of the discussion. It does seem very apt, if poetry were posted h

The surprising thing isn't that the signals exist or are picked up, but that the SnR is good enough to be able to support the level of confidence expressed in TFA.

The point of the comment you're responding to is not to justify it, the point is to rebut GP's assertion that the violence would have occurred anyway.

You might need an analysis class to verbalize things like that, but is it such a stretch to think that a typical woman might go notice these things implicitly/non-verbally?

I'm not sure quite what you're asking for exactly, given the link is for clang trunk and doesn't have the modifications discussed in TFA, and I don't dispute that clang does UB-based reasoning at -O3. But, I will argue t

Maybe this is just arguing semantics, but I don't agree with the definition you've given, and I don't think that your definition is what TFA means. "Exploiting undefined behavior" I think refers narrowly to the impl

Why would it go wrong, the ABI is stable and independent of compiler? You would hit issues with C++ but not C. I have certainly built kernels using different versions of GCC than what /lib stuff is compiled with, without issue.
