Fair point, I was more addressing the blocking-call concern. There are a number of ways you could get your debugger of choice to not halt a particular thread (this would admittedly require some extra work), but won't a typical browser

You can, it just takes a bit of work. In fact, you can do so much more because bitcoin transfer can be done in a way that is opaque to tax agencies. It is entirely possible that that is what happened here: I don't get the sense that th

A separate thread? I assume that's all the kernel would be doing anyway, no ring zero magic involved.

A shame this has to be done within the kernel. There was never much reason to implement TCP handling in ring zero.

There's been child abuse on Facebook too, but it doesn't seem to get the moniker "app plagued by child abuse".

I looked at the DCMA takedowns and they were all for either license files, or encryption keys. I'm not sure what you expect a company that sells software to do in these circumstances. This very different from the sort of reverse engine

I generally think of "int" as also an adjective, with both "const" and "int" describing the variable.

The state space here looks pretty small, it seems to me that with so much training it's just a case of brute-force search. When I think of "tool use" in regards to the intelligence of early humans, I imagine something more li

The right thing to do here is generally to avoid dealing with strings at all: you only need it to parse input and print/log output, beyond that everything should be using integer identifiers and handles.

Memory isn't being exposed, just the fact that something is touching memory in a certain place. That ssh login keystrokes leak via side channels is a long standing flaw in ssh. Memory access patterns can already be inferred from networ

This flaw in ssh has been known about for ages, and has nothing to do with Intel, and putting data in cache is neither Intel-specific nor a "weakness".

popcnt is generally going to take multiple cycles though, I'd expect the n&(n-1) method to be more performant. It's also vectorizeable and more portable.

Why should the kernel be making this decision at all, rather than leaving it up to the distro or a command-line boot argument? EDIT: can't see the video so if it is just a default rather than a forced disablement that's fine.

Rather than making armchair dismissals, consider looking at the paper and its citations which discuss the statistical methods used. From a cursory glance, it looks like they use a standard model of how genes affect traits, which uses O(N) p

I should clarify what I mean... yes, single mutations can definitely have far-reaching effects, but you would not expect a high-level emergent behavior to be the result of one or a few genes.

Right, and I don't think anyone would expect any complex behavior to be brought on by changes in only a few proteins.
