I'm curious what you dislike about SQLAlchemy, the ORM, the SQL toolkit, or both?

I don't think this is a good way to evaluate a framework; tutorials don't necessarily bear much relation to the reality of using the tool.

Pylons is deserving of attention. There is a small comparison of Django and Pylons here [ http://wiki.pylonshq.com/display/pylonscookbook/Concepts+of+... ]. I'm playing around with Pylons and have been impressed so far. The whole approach

The google tech talk from the book tour: [ http://youtube.com/watch?v=m6gaj6huCp0 ] I watched it a couple weeks ago; fun and fairly informative, but not terribly impressive. I highly recommend Connections [ http://news.ycombinator.com/item?

The point, as I understood it, was that the Cool Cam was instrumental in turning the project from a failure to a success. From the last para: "Tim's "cool cam" saved European Air War. It went from a money-leaking embarrassment to a top-tier

My reading was that the Cool Cam galvanised the management and the dev team, when they were feeling pretty stuck. It gave them a taste of the coolness that the project would be when done. I sometimes do something a little similar, say I'm b

Thinking aloud: Something about the idea of oracles makes me recoil. The obvious problem is that this approach may reinforce groupthink, both algorithmically and socially. And groupthink is already a considerable problem in these sort of sy

Change of context: book, film, game, chat... Preferably something that keep the brain ticking over, but allows the 'work' parts to take a rest. Oh, and virtually any kind of exercise.

News moving from print to web is a fundamental shift in the nature of the market, which brings many opportunities for growth by embracing the realities of the net, and a high chance of failure by ignoring those realities. Some thoughts: The

It depends on the context you are using it in! For social news (e.g. reddit et al.), this sort of thing might be a great help at providing personal recommendations. Here is a fun recent paper from google, about 'Scalable Online Collaborati

I imagine there are loads of variations on this theme (i.e. trust networks) that could produce useful recommendations, without the need for unwieldy computation. Sure there'll be a lot of number crunching, its just a matter of choosing the

There is plenty of research into this, try a search on ACM [ http://portal.acm.org/ ] or google scholar for 'trust reputation recommendation network'. Reddit could/should have been using this kind of approach for ages (I don't know if they

I would wager that the chances of two separate startups producing detrimentally similar websites is negligible, unless you are working on a totally unoriginal me-too type site (and even then...). [where 'detrimentally similar' is defined a

I suspect a lot of the disagreement expressed here is due to the nature of the people who read ycnews (and the colleges they went to). Entrepreneurially-minded people view college as this wonderful opportunity to learn, experiment, develop.

A smart move, long overdue. The web news business will probably evolve and mutate significantly in the next few years, and NYT was already well positioned for that. Dropping the wall puts them in an even stronger position.

A good question to pose would be: assuming a significant economic downturn is likely, how would this affect typical 'web 2.0' businesses? The answer may well be 'badly'. A great deal of these sites presume a healthy, wealthy economy: they h
