Both Japan and Korea have been strongly pro-natal basically forever, and both are staring into the abyss in terms of maintaining their native populations. Both suffer from exactly the same set of problems: (1) Massive numbers of people livi

I originally read the headline as starting with "Waffle House", and thought to myself, "That's a bit out of your lane, isn't it?"

I have no opinion on this law. There are plenty of perfectly good reasons why people might be against it.

Perhaps. Laws usually do precisely the opposite of what their titles describe. The PATRIOT act was quite possibly the most unpatriotic thing Congress could have done. The Inflation Reduction Act will increase inflation. I wouldn't be s

I never said it should be an appreciating asset. The value goes to zero. By law. A 22 year old used car has more value than a house of the same age in Japan. What happens if you get a job offer somewhere else? Tough shit, you’re gonna eat t

I call bullshit. First off, I’m willing to bet that the size of the Tokyo home is half or less compared to the New York option. There are “cheap homes” in Tokyo. They are effectively unlivable by modern standards, and when a Japanese person

Came here for this. They’re called “damper babies” and have cute little characters explaining the physics when you visit Taipei 101.

Yeah, the problem isn't necessarily the open plan. Those work if you design them well, but most companies don't, aiming for "urban chic" rather than "this is a place for people to get stuff done". The problem

Exactly. The difference between a joke and bullying is that if it's a joke, the mark gets a laugh out of it as well. Also that the honor of being the mark rotates around the group somewhat fairly. If you're either never the butt o

Exactly. Most units have access to cash as well. A small stack of bennies and some candies for the kids would do wonders if the town isn’t hostile.

Proper orders include things like “why are we securing this objective”. Really hard to make good choices unless you understand the next-level goal. Also: is the town hostile? Friendly? Unknown? Disposition kinda matters.
