I love Sabine Hossenfelder's videos but the audio effects on the transitions are killing me.

Not surprised to see California and Californian cities near the bottom of all the lists.

Yeah, I remember DDD being an incredible tool back in the day, but it was clunky even when it was new (1995). https://www.gnu.org/software/ddd/manual/pdf/ddd-paper.pdf

Raku has features that would appeal to mathematicians. It might seem like a parlour trick to you but that doesn't make it so for everyone.

You'd need to qualify that with an example. In my experience some things are faster in Raku and some are slower, so declaring that "Raku takes 6.5 times as long as Python 3.13" is pretty meaningless without seeing what it

The word 'regular' comes from the mathematical roots of automata and finite state machines.

Yeah, I am absolutely not a fan of ligatures. I also find it disorienting and I prefer to see what the compiler is going to see.

For Ethernet, packets are a physical layer concept. They encapsulate frames which are a data link layer concept. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_frame

Agreed, I'm a bit underwhelmed by intentrace when compared to the richness of strace. For sure, strace could maybe benefit from some UX like colorised output and a TUI that lets you filter syscalls while it is running.

Yes, I get by with dtruss which is inferior to strace but usually good enough. It's just a 1000 line dtrace program so I guess it could be improved.

I am so here for this comment. I forget things. If I don't take notes then I have to spend time rediscovering things. Searching my own notes solves that problem for me. I wish I had started taking comprehensive notes sooner.

Just learned about Kubed here, but I’m a longtime user of k9s and I’m keen to try out Kubed to see how it compares. It will be interesting to see if there are any workflow benefits to be gained from Kubed.

It's fascinating watching someone write code for macOS while only referring to Linux and FreeBSD man pages. On macOS, 'man ip' gives all the necessary info about raw sockets and IP_HDRINCL: > Outgoing packets automatically

Something I didn't see mentioned in the article about AVX512, aside from the xsave/xrstor overhead, is that AVX512 is power hungry and causes CPU frequency scaling. See [1], [2] for details and as an example of how nuanced it can

Agreed, if you want customisations and 3rd party modules then you expose yourself to this kind of bankruptcy. For me, it's mostly the same kind of 3rd party dependency bankruptcy you get from python, go, java, whatever. To avoid it ent

Person trapped in abusive relationship gets forced by abuser to show their computer activity which exposes their attempts to reach out for help. The fact that the recorded history exists means that it will be used for harm.

What an odd take. I don't see the moralising or the tantrum, just a take on events that happened and the likely consequences. I don't think you're getting a myopic US west coast viewpoint from a British author.
