And when that chance is perceived to be particularly high at Google people will act accordingly. Even if you think it's equal, we're probably in a regime of "nobody got fired for building on AWS".

I'd really like to see a public statement (hopefully a denial) by Google about this. As a matter of policy large tech companies often don't discuss how they track down leakers, or even permit speculation about it.

We called them 'script kiddies'. I don't think they qualify as hackers any more than someone who spends time on 4chan and runs LOIC.

Didn't Zecco already prove this wasn't a sustainable business model?

I was thinking the same thing. At least it could be a fun toy for low-volume trading.

This could be a great move for Simple. It could allow them to execute really quickly on the core product and user experience, while giving them access and expertise to backend banking support. Staying independent meant the latter was more

It's not easy for me to put myself in the mind of an Internet troll, but I have to imagine I'd also be the kind of person who would enjoy trolling researchers by filling out their personality tests in the most shocking way possibl

Some pretty horrific things happen if a baby is exposed to HSV during childbirth. And recent research into asymptomatic viral shedding indicates that simply checking for lesions at the time (and conducting a C-section if they're visib

It's not about transferring value - it's about substituting currency-equivalent value. What's the substitution going on in a mining pool? (And don't say electricity for coin, electricity is not valued similarly to a cu

Considering buying Starbucks gift cards with stolen credit cards is already an activity of scammers, this seems a bit dangerous. Let alone the FinCEN issues.

While there's potentially a debate to have over that topic (I'm sure the creators and some users of this site disagree with those concerns), the University's decision to censor the site strikes me as far less defensible than

Alternatively, the poor quality ensures that only rubes will click through. Why PPC for people who are going to be skeptical anyway?

This is a fun example. The formula's easy to prove by induction, but discovering it is less obvious and this is an interesting way. It's the tip of the iceberg though - generatingfunctionology is worth inspecting thoroughly.

Using a meta-study that showed tiny changes (statistical significance is irrelevant here, virtually any intervention could have had that kind of impact) to bolster a handful of anecdotes is pretty silly. I don't argue that this doesn&#

In the case of law, this is actually way too optimistic - an A-list school in no way guarantees you'll "do all right for yourself" anymore. Horror studies abound of even graduates of the top-5 finding themselves with loads o

None of these people are starving. They have access to food pantries, soup lines, and other community support. I'm not saying it's a nice life, but people in India and elsewhere are actually starving.

Pain treatment is one of the few areas where a placebo actually 'works' (in the sense that it leads to better outcomes than non-treatment). See Pollo et al, "Response expectancies in placebo analgesia and their clinical rele

Yeah "link" is probably too strong because it seems to be in one direction. They apply the informational contexts of physics to a game-theoretic model. Then they show that some stuff is implied in the latter. They also show that

It's not about some players performing better than others. It's about the game maybe having a better outcome (for everyone) in one case than the other. Maybe it's not surprising that 'extra' information improves th

My interpretation of this for those with a bit of game theory background: Locality (in physics) can be translated (in game theory) as a constraint on correlated equilibria, by pretty basic observations about Bayesian probability. Generally
