To add another data point, an FB junior would make around £65k base + ~£27k stock per year (+bonus). So getting over £100k at a FAANG in London seems pretty common to me, I would expect finance to pay even more. Personally I sympathise a lo

That's not how Wikipedia defines it. From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Source-to-source_compiler > A source-to-source translator converts between programming languages that operate at approximately the same le

I am really amazed by the amount of products Pine64 is releasing. Anyone know how they are able to do this/what their story is?

Yes, but most of the time C is considered to be low-level (and usually is lower level than the language that compiles to it). So “transpiling” is not correct.

I wish this was the case in London. I'm at a FAANG and have recently done a few interview loops with non-FAANG companies based in London (as well as a few that are based in SF but hire remote in London) and all were offering <40% of

Really cool! I think I see a bug: searching “Nim” shows “Nim (programming language)” but it’s not clickable.

Why do people even use S3 if that’s a risk? I really don’t get this, do most just not worry about accidentally wasting money or do they just not understand this risk?

Why has nobody done this in a legit/safe way yet? How hard is it to create the equivalent of Tether with 100% independent auditors from the start that verify the coins are backed by real fiat?

Seeing the “goalposts” argument is so tiring. We learn something new every day, of course our understanding of COVID changes and thus the recommendation of how to keep ourselves healthy does too.

This is the reason I have always stayed away from AWS and stuck to Digital Ocean/Linode. I'm sure I'm not the only one. But I am always surprised to see people complaining about this and still using AWS.

Author of Jester here. I agree that a nice website would be great to have for Jester (and I do intend to create one), but I think you place far too much importance on Jester having one. Jester/HttpBeast is used in production by big web

How much of that is libevent vs. io_uring and not epoll vs. io_uring? It would also be interesting to compare to other frameworks/languages on the TechEmpower Web Framework benchmarks.

My SO just got a new iPhone recently and only just realised she missed out on a 1 year free trial for Apple TV by 2 days. What a shame, they should really advertise this deal more.

I often find that developers jump for threads too early. Concurrency is much easier to reason about than parallelism.

Martin mentions online talks explicitly as something that he found even harder, but the reference is to talks that are still done live. I wonder if pre-recorded talks would alleviate some of the stress/anxiety. Personally I loved the o

Wiki data is awesome. I’ve been considering using it for some projects, but the main thing that’s keeping me away is the concern that some moderator will decide that my data doesn’t fit and remove it. Can anyone speak to this concern? On WP

It looks like it's only a matter of time until we are looking at the demise of Private Internet Access (a VPN service owned by the person that bought Freenode).

Not only did this project make a lot of false claims about itself but also other existing programming languages. This included Nim (which I am one of the core devs on). It’s rather sad to see people get roped in by these claims. This projec

It sounds like you are speaking to the author. I think it’s obvious they know how to do marketing (see how popular their blog post is proving). Scaling a platform to 100,000 isn’t hard, especially with millions in funding. HN isn’t odd at a

Please consider creating a write up about this. As someone that had very little knowledge about the hardware design space I'd love to learn more about it and see how Nim solves some problems there :)
