I really like the subtle animations in the UI. What do you use for the front-end/back-end tech stack?

Nope. My site doesn't use their API at all. Reddit's .json endpoints also don't require authentication (I don't actually use them either). They actually banned the user agent, which I made unique and forthcoming (literal

I've been considering using Reddit data to pre-seed the content in a successor to Reddit. Though I am unsure how that would stand legally. As a side note, I created an alternative Reddit API[1] and Reddit didn't like that so much

I honestly didn't expect this from Reddit. It seems like investors are really tightening their grip and they are banning subreddits and long-time users who oppose these changes left and right. I built a free API emulating the Reddit AP

Reddit is planning to make their API endpoints cost a lot of money. This is a (near) free alternative.

I still hope that Reddit will reverse its plans to charge money for its API, but with every passing piece of news like this it just feels less and less likely. In the interest of preparing for the worst and offering an alternative. I have c

My thoughts are: the read-only unathenticated API should cover 80% of the API usage for apps. If there is adoption I will think about the authenticated portions.

No, I'm not using the official API at all. I'm scraping + caching.

I have come up with a plan that might get a Reddit competitor up and running. I have also started to implement it. Step 1. Create an alternative API for Reddit (I've created an MVP for this here: https://api.reddiw.com ) Ste

Can Reddit really stop alternative APIs (which are free, or near-free) from taking hold when they impose pricing on their API? I created one such API[1] and hope that at the very least it puts pressure on Reddit to reconsider their pricing

Yeah, true. I'd definitely ask for legal advice before doing that.

Yeah, currently the limit is 50 comments. I plan to implement the ability to choose a sort and limit, assuming the API actually gets some usage. Right now the sort is whatever the new.reddit.com default is.

True, though that will seriously hurt their SEO.

Yep, very similar. My guess is that ~80% of API usage is read-only, so covering this should reduce API costs significantly for developers.

Not at the minute. I might open source it in the future, especially if I get a cease and desist. Though hopefully even if it comes to that someone like the EFF will help me fight it.

I've only done some rudimentary rate limiting checks and it doesn't seem like they do. Though I haven't pushed it far (~1000 rpm). In any case, my plan is to deal with it if it becomes a problem.

It basically scrapes reddit.com's HTML. Doesn't use the official API at all (that would defeat the purpose).

Every time I see social media recreated in a decentralised fashion I realise why the successful ones are centralised. The loading times of this are dreadful and I don't see how you'll be able to solve that problem when you're

It's actually interesting how they do it. The new and old Reddit seems surprisingly similar in how they handle at least the initial page loads. > And once you login, scraping will earn a ban. Reddit is also very over zealous with IP

That's another option. Scraping the webpages isn't actually that difficult (though admittedly it is likely to be less reliable).

I've been following this since it erupted and am currently developing something that I hope will either enable the Reddit community to transition to a new home or force Reddit to abandon its paid API plans. The first step in my plan is
