The difference is the barrier to entry / improvement. In the case of a quarter machine slot game it's pay to play, while it's a bait and switch for a game which only allows you to continue by paying more money regardless of how well you are

At my old job we had a few Ambient Orbs ( https://www.myambient.com/productDetail/OrbBeaconSupportPage... ) hooked up to serial ports on our PCs and had a Ruby server polling our logging db for different activities (commits to the repo, err

Agreed, and considering the post was added by the author of the linked article, it's not a huge stretch to suggest he knowingly did so.

If I read that visualization correctly, their homepage traffic increased +1000% while the pageviews on specific areas like tech / politics didn't increase at all over the same time span. That's not something I'd be happy about.

I believe your trickery involves capturing the output buffer and grep'ing for a fatal error, yes? We thought of doing that, but our site commands too much traffic for that to be a feasible option. If it's something less intrusive, I'm all e

The way I work: Always turn error notification off on live and have a process scanning the error logs so I'm notified of it. This might also be my biggest hangup with using PHP.

I'd be much more skeptical if this wasn't already the nations largest and best network. They bounce between #1 and #2 in subscriptions regardless of the phone selection. And by the time HSDPA is rolled out Verizon will be rolling out LTE.

You might want to integrate some sort of cache busting mechanism to your js/css/image files to prevent this kind of caching problem.

I used to be in both the Union Sq and Chelsea TechSpace offices. They're definitely pricey, and the Union Sq space was anything but quiet. The Chelsea spot was more quiet, but mainly due to it just not being as full. Nevermind the guy in th

I will echo the sentiments of Sujan and masklinn. A production machine should not have a checked out version of a repository on it ever. If you want the ability to rollback, you have the last N exports of your repo in their versioned folder

I'm aware you didn't say don't build your network (you didn't specifically point to doing so, but it's not my intention to call you out for not doing so). I also like the idea of a non-technical person getting their feet wet as to shake the

I'm sorry, but this article is completely disingenuous, and will only set these 'non-techie' entrepreneurs up for more disappointment and frustration. I love the idea of 'walking a mile in our shoes' to better understand what it means to be

Having gone through a few startups myself, and currently being at the tail end of one looking for an exit, I know at some point the desire for growth can be trumped by the desire to generate a return on your investment and move on. For us o

This might work for the simplest of sites like some have pointed out (e.g. a blog) but what I can't accept is having application logic on the frontend. Beyond authentication (let's say OAuth et all solve that issue down the road), one of th

I applaud this user for sticking his neck out to write such an article, but I find it quite lacking. "MVC is designed to solve the problem of simultaneously having multiple control entry points, and multiple display outputs, and it acheive
