If you take the absolute temperatures of 0 C in actual heat and add them together, you would have a cumulative heat of 273.15 C. Makes perfect sense.

Why? Rms has endorsed java since it went gpl. Goggles jvm is not gpl. If the used the gpl java then they might have less problems. I'm guessing Rms does not support either party here.

For those of you who are relatively new here, meta-discussion is discouraged on hacker news. Now everyone quickly downvote me!

But how does that avoid rewarding companies for moving overseas? It basically gives a huge competitive advantage to foreign companies. You have to tax the use of our market if you want to be fair. How else can we do it with a fair law th

It's worse then outlined in the article. Sally also pays other taxes with her "net" income. If she rents, her rent is certainly higher because of the landlords property taxes. If not, she pays it herself. Then there is sales taxes and e

Reading other peoples code can serve as a substitute for talking to other programmers. I would suggest that you find other projects that are similar to yours and see how they did things. Is your way better? Blog about it. Even if no one

Ruby is often just as terse as bash, and often simpler to understand. That said I still end up using bash, awk, sed, tr etc.. and don't revert to ruby until something gets complicated. Probably because bash is more portable.

I once was asked to fix some javascript. I opened the js file and _every_ _single_ _line_ _of_ _code_ was wrapped in a try {} catch() {} Some code really does suck.

This already has happened in Boston. http://joshuamcginnis.com/2008/08/09/wow-how-to-hack-boston-... It's really shocking that people think storing MONEY on a card that everyone has read/write access to is a GOOD idea.

For me, interacting with actual users motivates me to "polish" a project. I can imagine it is very tough if you can't go live. Not launching until things are perfect seems like a problem in and of itself.

No need to down vote. This is a thinly veiled compliment. It's a good question. Zed's output has been insane for the past few months. How he manages to keep up the pace is a very valid question.

I have horrible grammar, so I was trying to help out my brethren! I hate that word. Its biggest problem is that it's a conjunction without an apostrophe. ;-)

It's to bad that there is a glaring typo in the first sentence. If you are reading this, fix the spelling! Or maybe it's a clever filter for people who focus on the wrong thing. ;-)

I think it was commentary on the typical iphone fanboy more then the iphone itself. The point is, most people don't know why they want it, they just want it.

One thing I notice about a lot of "biz" guys is that that have no idea how long some piece of work should take. If you don't know the effort, how can you possible judge if he's being productive or not? Lots of people suck at estimating.

IMHO this doesn't help at all. The core issue is that I can't make an app that runs on multiple platforms. I know that cross platform is against Apple's best interest, but I just don't care. I won't be writing Apple applications.
