My brother in law (to be) started teaching me C++ on a road trip. When we got back I snagged a old Apple IIe from the high school that they were just tossing. After a few months of Apple Basic and a giant program where I didn't leave enough

Seems like a crap argument to me. If you're not being paid what differences does it make if you have a "job" or not.

I think this has more to do with people hating to write CRUD vs crafting queries for a report of some sort. I can see the argueement for thinking about SQL as wasting brain power when you're just doing simple interactions.

I work in an open plan office as well... And it is a mix of client facing staff and developers. For them it works really well. Not so much for us devs. Sennheiser CX300-B's are a real life saver. I tend to listen to Daft Punk or other music

Interesting. I can't listen to classical music when coding. I think it's because I'm used to listening to that particular style actively rather than passively as I'm used to with most music.

I agree. In a similar vein, I took a bunch of electronics classes and wasn't allowed to use my TI-92+ on the grounds that other students didn't have them. I though that was the biggest load of crap especially for a program that was geared t

Odd. I wonder why that is. I suppose it has to do with gaining the knowledge to work in the space. Once you do, it's probably easier to find a job with other companies in the same space.

I think it's the same situation as so called "audiophiles" who spend large amounts of money on gold cables and ultra expensive headphones. They may or may not be able to tell the difference but the knowledge that their 10000USD headphones p

To be fair, that's more a Conkeror problem than a ymacs problem. We're sort of trying to bang the square peg of the web into the round hole of keyboard based control. It often leads to gross hacks like all the page modes we have, which are

Closest I've ever come across is Conkeror ( http://conkeror.org ) That's using Gecko instead of WebKit but it's still a great project. It's my primary browser.
