It’s possible to write unsafe code in either but it’s also much easier to write safe code in both Pascal and Ada than C/C++. And it’s easier to write safe code in C++ than C. Memory safety exists in a spectrum, it’s not all or nothing.

I needed this. I have so many half-finished projects, it’s nice to think that there’s still a way to make them valuable in some way.

With SPARK mode you can check them at compile-time with provers and elide the runtime checks. You can do _very_ sophisticated type predicates this way.

When they put hidden cameras inside packages to catch porch pirates, plenty of thieves have a decent apartment, big screen TV. They’re not stealing groceries, they’re stealing things to fence.

The advantage to virtualization is having an API that can be used to spin up new k8s nodes. Bare metal provisioning is still a mess of PXE, badly-supported firmware, finicky DHCP and network settings and poor tooling. Server vendors could d

There are some fun things you can do with it like terminal image viewing, etc. The notcurses library uses it, some of their demo videos are really neat.

Yup, first-class support has been coming: https://kubernetes.io/blog/2023/08/24/swap-linux-beta/

Disabling swap is recommended on k8s nodes, since the idea there is to schedule workloads to use up the actual RAM/CPU of the box.

Serious Sam was such a fun game - this was a really interesting write up too. I wish this kind of dedication to low latency and efficiency was more widespread.

Nvidia didn’t start there - they took down a lot of established competitors in the GPU space, and a lot of other big companies are gunning for their position. I’d say their business operations and leadership are definitely worth studying.

My team is also in the process of refactoring a number of shell script CI pipelines into Go. With `go run` it might as well be interpreted, from a UX standpoint it’s as easy to call as a shell script but with the benefit of static types and

You could make the reverse argument - that the conference organizers think what defense contractors are doing is purely bad and could in no way be thought of as being good. Ultimately it’s up to _us_ (proxied through our elected officials)

I proposed something similar for D a long time ago, I didn’t realize though that there was prior art there with Smalltalk!

I’m a prodigious note-taker with pen and paper, and have made peace with the idea that I’ll never reference 99% of the notes I write. Same with webpages I bookmark for later. But for me, just the act of writing helps me to stay more focused

I was kinda wondering the same thing. I guess importing non-native species can be bad, but cross-breeding is something we’ve done for millenia. Seems like his real crime was doing this while not being an employee of Monsanto.

Hopefully this comes to fruition (with AMD on board too). I wonder if it might spur some more hobbyist OS research.

I think that’s the GP’s point though. 70 years from now are we going to look back on these studies and think “what the heck were we thinking?”

I seem to recall that Gobo turned on case-insensitive shell tab-completions by default so in practice it was a non-issue.

I ran Gobo for a while and really enjoyed some of their ideas. It was started by Hisham Muhammad, the author of htop. It’s a shame that it didn’t get more traction. We probably wouldn’t have needed Docker or any of the gazillion package man

Given how fast the D compiler is, this might be a nice alternative to something like LuaJIT for an embedded scripting language in other apps.

It’s not untrustworthy because it’s offensive, it’s offensive because it’s untrustworthy. If people think that Google is trying to rewrite history or hide “misinformation” or enforce censorship to appease actual or perceived powers, they’re

Making IOCP work underneath stateful protocols like TLS is more complicated still, and then add on multithreaded handlers and things get messy real quick. It’s a similar story with io_uring. It can be done (I’ve done it) but its not easy to
