The question I've been wondering about is how he'll get money to live on. Presumably it won't be long before the US will freeze his bank accounts, if they haven't already. Has he set up offshore bank accounts in advance?

I've been working on a real-time collaborative app that does just that: the client collects a list of edits and tries to push them to the server. It always displays the state as the last known accepted state with the local edits replayed on

Same thing here: I learned some Spanish in high school, then studied Mandarin later. Now whenever I try to say things in Spanish, Mandarin comes out. It's like it took over the "foreign language" spot in my brain. I was never really fluent

I use it to save backups of my desktop and laptop home directories to a home NAS mounted with NFS, which later gets synced to another NAS. It's a decent tool. I encrypt with a separate gpg key, do mostly incremental backups, and a full one

Besides being able to achieve higher pressure (which I agree isn't terribly important), the Expeds need extra force to inflate because they're filled with down or synthetic insulation, which dramatically increases their insulating value. A

You need a lot of interior baffling or insulating material stuffed inside an air mattress to get the R value up to 3 or 4. In a big open tube you get convection, which speeds up heat transfer. Note that the original NeoAir, which is about t

No, the point is he has $600K+ in the bank as self-insurance. If he has to pay $10K in one year for medical expenses, he would do something like reduce the amount that his family draws by $1K a year for the next ten years, not cut the draw

Lem's best work (IMO) is the stuff about robot culture, including jokes. Try The Cyberiad and Mortal Engines. Edit: Though, to be fair, Lem didn't write near-future SF, his robot stories were more like alternate universes.
