Personally, I'd like to see the ACLU take up the issue of "hostile work environment" legislation. The ambiguity of this term and the various ways different courts have interpreted it seems to be one of the greatest threats to

I disagree. Those things seem big when you first discover them -- there's really nice feeling that comes with finding them out. "Ohhh, I'm X, so that explains why I have preference Y". But some people try too hard, to ha

To be fair, that's a rather large topic. Not to mention one that PG wouldn't be terribly qualified to answer I don't think. How do you go about your life knowing that some sizable portion of it identifies you in a way that af

Definitely not, although any grouping of beliefs with a concept mapping to original sin strikes me as religious. So kind of a "not all rectangles are squares but all squares are rectangles" situation.

I suppose it's too soon to tell if they take off, but they seem to fit the bill to me: Priests, holy writings, dogmatic beliefs, original sin, etc. As a way of bounding this definition, I don't think javascript would count as a re

I don't think it does, so long as one uses a sufficiently broad definition of religion (e.g. crypto, wokeness). Also my impression is that there was a spike of js hate ~3-5 years ago that has since subsided. I think it grew alongside t

A more modern analysis can be found in The Revolt of the Public by Martin Gurri. His hypothesis is that what was once an information trickle has become a virtual tsunami with the internet + cell phones + satellite television, etc. Governmen

A related angle I haven't seen much investigation on is to what degree we'll see negative excess deaths (surely there's a better term, but I'm at a loss) in the coming years due to how much covid impacted older folks.

There's a tricky balance that needs to be struck between personal agency and the mechanisms which society puts in place to prevent aggressors from victimizing people. One such mechanism is the mentality of "believing victims"

Hadn't considered that -- but has there been a rise in childhood psychological trauma? There's definitely been a shift in the way we talk about trauma, just in the sense that we open up about it more, so that could be part of it.

Revealed preference doesn't always work well as an explanation for why people do what they do though. E.g. if someone falls for an investment scam a-la Madoff, the person obviously didn't want to end up destitute because of that.
