"The Dead Hand" combined with "Command and Control" ( http://www.amazon.com/Command-Control-Damascus-Accident-Illu... ) makes for very sobering reading. Put the two together, and it's a genuine miracl

That's a false dichotomy. Obviously finance can help. Vitamin A in small amounts is healthy too. I think most people realise this. A more interesting question is whether finance the past 15 years has become a net loss for society, not

If your database has specialised compression, or keeps most data in main memory compressed (I can think of at least one that does), then this approach won't work. For almost everything else though, putting compression in the filesystem

Somewhat unrelated: some filesystems also provide online compression (e.g. ZFS). I think that's a more appropriate layer to apply general compression.

In fact, I'm not sure I've heard of anyone who wrote any significant amount of lisp code and came away talking about parentheses. Whelp, now you have. Hi! :) Although I sometimes miss the goodies homoiconicity brings, I much pre

There's nothing wrong with OCaml specifically. The problem is the overall argument, which seems to fundamentally misunderstand why machine virtualisation is used.

It's not a logical fallacy, but the F117A is a poor argument for stealth. Military weapon systems are a war unto themselves: each side learning about the other's and creating new systems to remove those advantages. Basically, once

And a whole lot more gotchas when things go wrong. Networks cause all sorts of fun byzantine failures; local is a simpler problem to reason about.

Just a few years ago Valve was being lauded for giving developers a viable new channel that took a very small slice of the pie (~30%) compared to what had come before (>90%). Plus the indies that have managed to get on have consistentl

Companies that have any technical workers must have at least two promotion tracks: management and technical. It's downright stupid "promoting" someone into a position where their skills and affinity cannot be fully utilised.

More importantly, OVH doesn't offer anything with ECC RAM until you're near the $100 range. Do not run anything beyond a throwaway personal blog on a server without ECC RAM.

That's mostly true, but just like managed languages can leverage JVM, native languages can leverage LLVM. The advantage of going the native route is that it gives you improved observability and post-mortem. The JVM is a VM (Java's

strace shows syscalls -- it's effectively truss. That's useful and all, but what if you want to instrument arbitrary parts of a program, not just the syscall interface? By function or instruction? Either in userspace or in kernel?

I'd be delighted for a version of Clojure that both drops the JVM and can bind easily with C. One of Clojure's big advantages is that it uses the JVM. One of Clojure's big disadvantages is... that it uses the JVM.

I'm a bit leery of that argument, because in my experience the most important component of a language is its ecosystem. By far. I've played with many really nice languages, but never used them seriously because they had no librari
