Haha what I remember in those cases was that the main value in having the assigned book was being able to same page during class discussions. I mean, literally the same page — so if someone says “what did ya’ll think about this quote on p.1

Ha I would spend a couple hours in front of the library copy machine at the start of the semester, and then take my stack to the store and get it bound myself.

Yea, this one was weird to me. Most of my professors would automatically send out their slides after class. After all you just… showed them to the whole class. What’s the point of keeping them a secret afterwards?

Have you seen what books cost? Not textbooks, like those from Pearson or something, but regular books. This guy is a philosophy professor, so if he is assigning a book every 1-2 weeks, in a 14-week semester, let’s say that’s like 8 books. B

I used to intern for a literary magazine and I can confirm that half my copy-editing was enforcing proper use of em-dashes. This was well before 2022.

Apparently, this is not just putting Plex's own proxy/DNS service behind a paywall -- they will also gate some small features (such as the "custom server access urls") that are necessary for one to run their own reverse

To me your comment seems to be implying one of two things: 1) Black people are biologically hardwired to have a shorter life expectancy than white people 2) A shorter life expectancy among black people doesn't count -- it's only l

One problem I’ve encountered at my small startup in evaluating OCR technologies is precisely convincing stakeholders that the “human-in-the-loop” part is both unavoidable, and ultimately beneficial. PMs want to hear that an OCR solution wil

I read this part as the author saying very diplomatically that this code was flat out bad and obscure, and not simply a different style or paradigm. I think your point holds if it was in fact the latter, but with the lengths the author goes
