The room setup being weird is the thing that strikes me about this. My desk (probably like many?) is against a wall, not a distance from it. That dead space between back of desk and wall with the projection on it isn’t going to work in many

Interesting. Yes, I gather the work ethic is very different. But (again, possibly naively) I would assume that if one wanted to do as I have done (make a small, “ok for an income” lifestyle business) then one could do so. Maybe that isn’t t

Um, yes, and I’m completely uninformed about living and working in the US but doesn’t the ethic play the same wherever you are? Be interested to hear why you feel this kind of approach wouldn’t work.

I’m 52. I’ve run a micro tech consultancy with my wife for 15 years. We live by the sea in Cornwall and we’ve chosen every step along the way to deliberately not grow our company by taking on staff, instead using freelancers. We’re comforta

I tried with Masto, I really did. I even self-hosted for a while. But the problem it has in my humble and not hugely technical opinion is: 1) it’s complicated (learning about why your server wasn’t federating with another was not what I ne

I'm entirely in the "make it easy" camp. I'd rather spend more time gathering, cooking and eating recipes than developing an over-complex schema which I have to think about all the time. I found this [0] which converts m

Surely the point is (has always been?) about movement ? Doing one thing all day = bad; doing variable things which involve movement between and around them = better. Being actually active = good. No?

I love it. But now you need to make one for real pianos as that's where I actually spend most of my time noodling :-)

Weird, unlike everyone else on this thread I just don't see this as a problem to be solved. My wife and I talk to each other (I know, crazy, right?) and one of us suggests something to eat and then we decide. No subscription required.

I use Raindrop[0] for all bookmarks and have flirted with Omnivore and Wallabag over the years. But I always come back to just using Raindrop and "Unsorted" for my read-it-laters. I've got a feed into Reeder from here which w

Spark. HN probably won't like it on account of HN reasons - but I've tried all the email clients over the years and this one is the one that has stuck the longest. Great on iOS too.

Strong disagree on the "childhood sweetheart" thing. In my experience / opinion there is more to be said for a (gentle) bit of "playing the field" when you're in your teens and early twenties. Get that stuff ou

This is great HN fodder but IMO, it's b/s. I think what's being missed here is that yes there are sites being built using Webflow / Shopify / whatever. And there are solutions for landing pages, or simple blog sites

There's been nothing "bumpy" about ACF. It has been solidly supported, developed and documented for years.

I was reminded of my all-time favourite book on meditation / mindfulness: Mindfulness in Plain English by Henepola Gunaratana. The article had a similar style. Gunaratana’s book is full of humour and beautiful writing and I’d recommend

This is a really great description of why a meditative practice is worth taking time on and also why it’s worth railing against todays constant attention deficit and lack of empty, quiet spaces, both mental and physical. Excellent writing!

Thanks for mentioning ProcessWire. I've heard of it but never looked. Just spent a couple of hours fiddling and I have to say - really like the look of this. Thank you for bringing it to my attention!

I don’t know where you’re going with this. The fact is that some extensions are paid and they have value. So why not pay the developer for the value they’ve added?
