Every time I read about Stripe, it seems that the most interesting people work/have worked there (Julia Evans, Aditya Mukerjee, Mudge, Brandur, Greg Brockman). And it seems like a great culture. But the CEO's "progress studie

I remember when in 2006/7ish he said that Apple should give up on hardware and license MacOS. I assume that he knows that vertical integration is Apple's whole strategy, so I guess his grift is just going for the stupidest takes p

This happened to me after I moved to NJ recently. When I told someone about this at a coffee shop, they said "it's because your last name is Putin" (I'm Russian). :/

For sure. Let me clarify a bit -- I used this specific course as an example, but I am talking about the novel field of Progress Studies in general. The entire _field of study_ that this course introduces suffers from the problem I described

We are in agreement -- I do not believe the funding has compromised Signal's security. It has, however, compromised my trust (how do you know the funding has no strings attached?)

(As a Russian) I feel worse about the Russian gov't -- Signal's American gov't funding is a red flag, but afaik Signal has not been compromised by this (Signal's awful UI is why I don't use it). On the other hand, i

My favorite Hammerspoon use is binding applications to hotkeys, e.g. Ctrl-3 for editor, Ctrl-4 for terminal, Ctrl-5 for browser, etc. It is so much faster going directly to an app than cycling through the apps in the alt-tab switcher. Addit

You’re right, math is a little bit less collaborative than other endeavors still. Lone mathematicians still make huge contributions, e.g. Perelman. But for example, one could call the endeavor of classifying all the finite simple groups a b

Yes! It’s a pretty big controversy so far as computing goes and a very interesting read. ENIAC (ISBN 978-0802713483) is a good account that includes it. I have to wonder what else gets washed away in all the myth-making about these guys.
