Interview and get another offer. This has been the best negotiating tactic I have been able to come up with. Would love to hear tips from others.

If you work for a few large companies you start to notice the pattern of Win32 like code. It should be dead, but it cannot be dead and it will not be dead until the company is dead. Network effects and political power of entrenched players

I highly encourage you to setup some time to talk to maintainers of open source projects that you think are doing well. Ask them how they are doing and how much help they receive.

You will be surprised how little user contributions most open source projects receive. I have a few friends who are maintainers of key projects in the Python OSS ecosystem, most of them are struggling with burnout.

Am not sure if you are joking. As someone who does not use social media much, are people so hooked that withdrawal would cause them to commit suicide?

I think this is a sad reminder that as a developer just because you add value, doesnt mean you will be able to capture it. There is a tragedy of commons at play for tools, most of us (including companies) are unwilling to pay good money for

Not so sure about this. World is increasingly moving to distributed scale out databases. Once you go that way consensus algorithms and rpc costs dwarf disk io speed.

Big companies dont fail due to external forces, they fail because of internal dynamics. Everything apart from x86 is a hobby at Intel. Also think they are addicted to high margins and expect that a substantial portion of cost of a device go

Because as a CEO you dont want to wake up every day to headlines that you are profiting off exploitation of children / nazis / hatecrimes. A probabilistic filter of best effort moderation does not cut it from a CEOs point of view.

Networks are trying to move away from long tail content since it is so expensive to moderate. I think in next 10 years expect social networks and video playing websites to become much like network television. Ie there will be a vetted list

Think about morale at Lyft. You have employees locked in who cant sell for first couple of months. They are seeing their networth plummet everyday.
