Personally, I don't see Bitcoin replacing nationalized currencies like the USD as a store of value. I just see it as a great way to send and receive payments online. Kind of like PayPal, but decentralized. For that use-case, it doesn't ev

Free-speech issues aside, there's also the question of whether you want the IAB/IESG/IETF engineers to continue define Internet standards, or whether you want a group of telephone monopoly bureaucrats to take it over. Let's consider some of

But then when I come up with a good idea that I want to use in FOSS, I still have to keep it secret for days/weeks until it gets though a "patent-mining process" at whatever company I happen to be working for at the time. There are a lot of

No, seriously, please just use autotools. It's way better for users and packagers of your library. If you're not going to do that, then use an alternative that provides the same command-line interface as autotools (so that things like "./c

The Linuxes still have different library locations, and things move around as new things get added (e.g. multiarch). Seriously, get over it and just use autotools.

Why do you only ask about "large points"? If you implement 'most of CSS, except for minute details', then you haven't implemented CSS, and web developers suffer because they have to add UA-specific hacks for your implementation.

Well, nothing yet, but multi-signature Bitcoin accounts are the current top priority of upstream Bitcoin developers, so I suspect we'll soon see hardware tokens and/or 3rd-party services acting helping to prevent Bitcoin theft. Actually, th

How do you think client-side window decorations impacts this? It seems to me that it would be difficult or impossible to create a secure GUI if every application gets such complete control over user interaction.

Right, but it was improving. If there's no high-performance 3D hardware target with a hope of having FOSS driver support, it'll put a stop to any innovation in that space. Hence, this is bad.

What does it even mean to provide an "understanding of the world" if you're not offering predictive, objective power? As far as I know, understanding the world---by definition---means building a mental model of it that has predictive pow

The preferred syntax, which is more flexible and doesn't leak the loop variable, is to use generator expressions: >>> x = ['1', '2', '3', '4', '5'] >>> y = list(int(i) for i in x) >>> y [1, 2, 3

Javascript is just Scheme with a C-like syntax and a limited number of bad design decisions (like automatic semicolon insertion and the == operator). PHP is a never-ending fountain of bad design decisions, because its core devs continue to
