This is cool, but the light isn't nearly powerful enough. I have a CREE-powered flashlight that I've been using for the past 4 years or so. I think it cost about $60, and it runs on a single AA for a couple of weeks when I run it in flashin

This has been another big learning. Basically, it's super-important to validate your ideas before you start building. I have trended towards doing more and more customer validation as things have gone along.

These were built over about a three-year period. One of my big learnings (to be detailed in a future post) is that I have product ADD.

Why did SocialCam split off from JustinTV? Did JustinTV turn into TwitchTV and then divest SocialCam since it wasn't directly related to the direction the company was going in?

Or, if your Wordpress site gets hacked, your entire site isn't p0wned. I have a friend who had his WP site hacked last week. Fortunately, he hosts his application on a separate server, so there were no (major) security issues.

I was thinking that this was going to be a filter on HN that blocked the comments by people you didn't like. That would be kind of a cool project. Basically, you could click "hide" and no longer see comments by a particular person. Over tim

I have discovered that the only real way to learn is to make mistakes. You can read about mistakes in a book, but until you actually make them and experience the consequences, you haven't really learned. Once you make the mistake, you will

It's funny how things come full circle. Circa 2004, Firefox was the browser that forced Microsoft to reinstate its browser team (which had been disbanded around 2001 after the release of IE6). It had a revolutionary interface, and did a lot

Congrats! I knew Aaron at Google, and he was one of the smartest engineers around. He also built one of the coolest pieces of software I've ever seen (Robocraft). It was a Starcraft clone where users had to code up AIs for each of the units

Ah, 6.001 Brings me back to the fall of 1998, and many long Thursday nights spent working on problem sets. This was before you could do the exercises on the web, so you had to go into an ancient lab with grayscale terminals (unless you want

This was Hacker School ten years before Hacker School. Sure, the methods of instruction were a bit different, but the overall purpose was similar.

Apologies. I misread "extensive" as "exclusive" in the article. It doesn't matter - I'm sure that Intel gave Motorola a sweet deal to get an "extensive" commitment.

I'm guessing that Intel cut Motorola a really sweet deal to get them to sign an exclusive contract. The decision probably had little to do with Intel being a better platform, and more to do with cost per chip. Let's face it - Windows 8 runn

I have dinged people because they wouldn't write on the whiteboard. To be fair, every time this actually happened, I gave the candidate the chance to write his solution on paper, and I ended up dinged him anyways because his work was sub-pa

I agree with you here. This is a contrived example - I would expect a bit more from an "article" voted to the front page of hacker news. Sure, you shouldn't hire a developer merely because he went to the right schools and did well, but I ca

I'm not sure which incubators you are talking about. This post seems like more of a rant than a productive analysis. I have seen some indications that there are too many seed-stage companies right now, but I'm not sure if any one incubator

Agreed. I built something like this in a few minutes when it was needed for a recent project. I was looking at Javascript "libraries" to do this, and then realized that it could be done with a tiny bit of CSS.

I guess that I'm kind of worried this won't be a good thing (at least for Web OS). Without any concrete plans for upcoming Web OS devices, it is unclear whether HP will actually continue to develop the OS. There aren't all that many devices
