I was being slightly tongue-in-cheek with the "moochers" comment. There are a lot of working poor in the 47%, and those are the ones that I was talking about. The GOP views the poor as responsible for their plight and not victims of circu

There's a big reason this won't fly in the US. The GOP won't support it because it's a gift to moochers. I agree with you, it's a better way to do it and to raise the standard of living in this country. It might even have a big effect on

Cities are more and more doing this (what you specified for pedestrian lights outside the US). My problem: there's a very large intersection that I walk through daily that changed to "only allow walk when the button is pushed" and 9 times

Problem is, once a law is used for a new use, no matter how virtuous it is, it will now be seen as one of the tools in the toolbox for prosecutors to punish people. Many of those new uses will not be looked on favorably, either.

This is just plain naive. See Shorel's comment, and to that I'll add: That is YOUR definition of where to write data files. Not mine and certainly not everyone's idea. Saying that all apps should fit this model is just absurd.

Agree 100%. I went there as an undergrad and I hated it, except for my comp sci courses, which I loved. The department was young then, and it was a completely different experience being there during the rise of BSD.

The hypocrisy of the TC article is disgusting. They're recklessly throwing stones at people who may be in delicate positions themselves. As soon as I saw it was written by Arrington, I hit the back button. That tells me all I need to kno

You really think that the OEM-installed apps on a Windows machine make it terrible, and the OS contributes nothing? I have a friend that really loves Sony laptop hardware. Every time he buys one, though, he has to spend a day cleaning of

Donuts in moderation are fine. Seat-belts in moderation are not a good idea. That's why your analogy doesn't really work. I said "craze" because the anti-carb mood is somewhat of a fad, so I think the word "craze" is perfectly suited.

You can spend $10 to get HBO because you have cable. For those of us that don't, HBO Go is not an option.

The Krispy Kreme situation is quite different. They had an accounting scandal that actually caused them to contract, in addition to the health craze reasons that many people assume. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/11/business/11place.html?
