At this point we almost need to stop saying facebook programs in PHP. I know this was defending PHP, but look at what is happening. Facebook ( big engineering firm, lots of developers and resources ) could not get php to work for them short

Speed and size would be the two biggest. The start up time of the JVM and the size of the generated executables ( jar files ) make scala not terribly useful for those small programming tasks ( scripting and such )

Right but if i can convert the java types to be scala code I can use the scala compiler to compile to whatever my target is.

So now I am really wondering. What is the sub java parts of the JVM that need to be implemented to completely free Scala from the JVM ( i.e. what C interfaces are needed to allow scalc to compile to LLVM or comparable VM)

Just tested this on my GMail. None of the tools required to send an E-mail are hidden. In fact you can do it all without even using a mouse if you have shortcuts turned on.

because some functionality was moved and now requires more interaction doesn't mean its objectively worse. If by moving a feature that is very seldom used ( like renaming the subject ) allows you to make common features easier to use t

I like the new interface. I find it easy to use and streamlined. Since we are all talking about our old parents, FWIW my mother (60) found it easier to use the new interface then the old interface. There is really nothing objective that is

No, but it happens, in any school at any degree level there are people who "pass" who shouldn't. Even in my lowly engineering school ( graduating class of Computer Engineers was maybe 30 ) there were a number of people who sh

You know poor candidates can go to great schools, they can even get doctorates. They can also be useless, and the set of skills that make you useful are not necessarily the set that you get from an advanced degree. Also FWIW the part about

Was this man's computer use being charged by the key stroke? I mean I understand using a few abbreviations here and there, but i.c ? At least name your files descriptively. I would avoid using this for realzies if only for the fact tha

So workers written in go are 1000x times faster then workers written in Ruby? It almost seemed from the documentation that the workers were written in Ruby as well.

If they want wider adoption they will need to document extensions. There are tons of extensions out there and I would say most non trivial installation use at least a few of them.

The biggest issue I have had with HHVM is that the extensions are totally undocumented ( not like there is much for the Zend engine ). So trying to port over extension to it is a excersize in futility.

MySQL has a few engines that still have a database level lock ( MyISAM, MEMORY ) and those generally preform better for unbalanced loads ( i.e very read heavy or very write heavy )

As I understand it if you never have your trades "cleared" you never incur any cost. When you trade the price to have the trade cleared through a clearing house is built in. When big firms trade they only need to go to the clearin

This is actually how it was done. A few times a day large orders would be matched and executed. We moved away from it, and I am not sure if its still used at any of the exchanges anywhere.
