Wow, that's the perfect XKCD for my work right now. I'm integrating ML into my very traditional field of science and it seems like the most fitting place is on the "boring" problems.

I am going to guess that the police or media outlets chose the most nefarious looking photo they could find. They have that type of power to drive a narrative. It's the same type of bias as when the mugshots of criminal police officer

This is the info I was looking for. Julia is such an awesome language, but I can't use it due to latency. As soon as this gets fixed I would switch over all of my data analysis in a heartbeat.

I am really concerned about November with the current administration pushing a narrative of voter fraud. Now they've appointed a partisan postmaster general which I haven't heard of being done before.

I sincerely hope that with all of the well documented instances of police abuse and lack of accountability in the last few months that people in the US are starting to wake up to the problem. Additional scrutiny from journalists like this

I have to disagree with you that the piece brushes over the firing. The author makes it a point to say that Shor's firing is pretty universally thought of as unjust. They also bring up an open letter written by proponents of cancel cu

The article is put in the context of the US reopening schools, but there's nothing comparable about the two situations. As far as I can tell, European countries have orders of magnitude fewer cases per million people than the US [1].

Absolutely agree with you. Sometimes your unorthodox opinion just sucks. Also, was anybody else bracing themselves for what "unorthodox" was code for while reading? I think I'm so used to seeing this argument used in an at

The article highlights dataset biases that reinforce existing biases in society. It becomes a problem when ML affects the real world. See e.g. predictive policing [1]. [1] https://www.vice.com/en_ca/article/889xy

WRT the comment on whether being gay is a choice: I am gay and I spent a solid decade of my life hating myself for it. I am talking about hating myself to the point of considering suicide. When I was younger I tried to force myself to bec
