Unfortunately some proprietary scientific software is compiled for x86 only and we just get access to the binaries. I don't like it, but that's just how some fields work.

I think this is cool, but engineering for engineering's sake aside I've seriously looked at building a raspi cluster a couple of times and have always concluded that it isn't worth it. The real selling point for me is energy

Who their employee's vote for isn't bias. Speaking of bias, all of your sources are skewed to the extremes of the political spectrum and I've got to imagine that they are giving a very one sided view of the problem your talki

I too want to believe in individual people having the ability to determine fact from fiction. The problem I see, however, is the power dynamic nowadays. What chance does the average person have in rooting out disinformation when it's

Most of the points made here have been explained for a long time at this point and there doesn't seem to be a good reason to doubt we've discovered gravitational waves. To go over the points made in the article: * Sabine complains

Exactly, and you only saw it online. This type of "alphabet soup" people doesn't really exist outside of the twitter rage machine. I volunteer for a large organization promoting gay rights and have never seen people complain

This is something I'm struggling with too. I'm about to finish the masters part of my US based PhD and I like my adviser and love what I'm studying, but the lab's culture (or lack thereof) is really isolating. I'm

Can someone more informed than me explain the context around Weyl semimetals? I see them coming up more and more in the condensed matter crowd, but I don't understand the interest.

UED is cool because it has the potential to let us make "molecular movies". IE collect data on the position of atoms in a molecular as a function of time w/ atomic resolution. The main engineering challenge is producing a h
